What is the City the game takes place in?
Has it ever appeared in the previous games of the series?

I believe someone here said Berlin, but I think that may be a fan wank based on how many of the enemy names are German.

the area seems to be the same as in original nier there's Facade just a little bit away from it, which was in the same place its prologue was, which was in japan from what i remember.

all those intel japanese tidbits like parking tickets and such which reference tokyo and japanese people also suggest that.

Probably Tokyo.
Plenty of Old World Archives with in the old city ruins that refrence Japan.

Most likely Japan, but you're also talking about a world that has changed so much since the age of Humanity that it probably isn't very similar to any modern day Earth anymore.

Like Japan is referenced quite a bit, the Ground Zero of the events that lead into NieR:Gestalt was in Tokyo, the intro to NieR shows off some of a post-apoc Japan. But NieR takes place so much further into the future that it's possible none of that is left, the landmasses might not even be the same after that many years and after the many events that happened within that time (considering how often society is rebuilt and then destroyed, over and over and over again, on different scales of destruction.)

Yeah like stated the others, it's probably japan, but in a very modified world, don't forget that the game takes place in 11945 IIRC.
Emil even said that the desert was growing since there was no humans anymore

There's a shot in which your fighter craft descends into Earth's atmosphere, showing the Eastern United States. I thought the ice caps would have buried much of the land in 10,000 years, but it looks the same.

What I realized, is that many of the enemy names are actually philosophers: I at least recognized Pascal, Engels and Hegel. Sean Paul = Sartre. And Nietzsche is mentioned by Pascal once.
Minor spoiler from after playing through the game: Marx is there, too (the first boss you'll encounter in your first playthrough). Probably not a coincidence that Marx and Engels are related machines.

One thing that keeps bothering me about the world is that apparently the sun doesn't go down anymore. So what happened? Did the earth rotation stop. I'm no astronomist but that must have quite a few implications. (Not that it really matters, but it's in the back of my head.)

Think it was an NPC conversation that mentioned that, the Earth not rotating. Forgot where.

The defeated goliath asked what night is, and then 2B and 9S talked about how there used to be nights. But they didn't explain what happened. I just took it as a joke, because the devs didn't wanna go through the trouble of creating a weather cycle.

Eastern United States? If I'm not mistaken it clearly showed Mainland Japan. Since when is eastern United States on an island?

I also only remember Engels talking about there being no night, but he didn't explain why. Did you mean him?

On topic: I think the game takes place in (and around) Maihama. It's referenced in the parking ticket at the truck near the factory and the amusement park could very well be the Disney Resort.

This is correct, as can be seen from this screenshot[i.imgur.com].when you decend towards Earth.

I just spent a few minutes looking for the scene in chapter select. Looking at the angle of descent and the distance from the continent, it could actually be Canada or northern Asia.
