I didn't enjoy Metal Gear Rising nor any hack'n'slash games.
And I saw the some gameplay videos and I think the world and the enviorenments seem very bareboned and boring BUT I really do enjoy a good story and since the game got so much approval by critics should I still consider buying it?

Buy it, test it and if you don't like it get a refund. Simple as that

If just playing for the story, 2 hours may not be enough to get into it though.

I neve buy game on Steam unless they are on sale. Retail verion is much more cheaper where I live, so there is no going back.

This game is more of an action JRPG rather than a hack and slash game.

No it really isn't. It's a tried and true Platinum Hack and Slash. Everything about the combat is hack and slash with bullet hell and light RPG elements.

If you dislike the gameplay then you're going to have to suffer through a lot of it. The story requires multiple playthroughs so it's going to get really tedious if you hate character action games.

No it really isn't. It becomes more evident if you try Hard Mode and Very Hard Mode. But even in the lower difficulties, the RPG elements heavily outweighs the hack and slash elements in every single aspect. Any passionate gamer who's looking for a new character action game to beat and completely master will be terribly disappointed by this game.

No. You can only play so many games in your life, don't bother with one that only has some elements you like.

If you're looking for a good plot, you've come to the right place, but this game does have gameplay like those other titles, so you'll have to be able to bear it to get the plot.
But yes, if you're looking for a good story this is a good game to try. The original Nier too.

And if it means anything, the gameplay shifts genres a good bit, so maybe you'll find that that offers a bit of freshness to it.

Hello, if you are here for the story, the game has an "easy mode" that makes the game pretty easy (but not super easy), because it gives you some Auto-Chips (equipable items that make the game easier), that helps players not used to play Hack'n'Slash game. I will tell you to give it a try on easy mode and use the auto-attack and other auto chips to help you in your adventure in this amazingly devastated but beautiful world, Yoko Taro stories are sometimes hard to understand, but if you do you're going to love it.
