there's plenty of lore summary videos that will help you understand setting of this world, try a youtuber named clemps

here are some videos that can get you started on the lore

btw there are some references to the original Nier but it's playable w/o previous knowledge, they're not necessary to understand the story, just the bigger picture, so to say.

I think that there are only references to other games in the series and some characters, but game is set 10000 years after first Nier and the story is completely its own, but plot of other games is very complicated and i actually didnt understand that much :beatmeat:

you can play it with no knowledge of the other games but you wouldn't understand some little things. there's a couple nice summaries of drakengard and nier on youtube, also a youtuber called mr Clemps made a 3 part in depth summary of nier

You can get the bigger picture by watching lore summary videos, but you'll still be missing out on specific details because you haven't played the games. I can guarantee you that you'll gloss over certain specific things while someone who has played the games would probably react in some way, be it surprise, sorrow or interrogation.

The creator says that you can play it with no prior knowledge, apparantly he likes putting out standalone games.

That isn't what he said. Yoko Taro said you would be asking yourself less questions if you didn't know anything prior to playing Automata. Which makes sense, since you won't even notice if the game is making throwbacks to previous games or not, or what has changed in terms of story since NieR.

Not necessary, but you'll definitely be missing out on a few impactful moments. I'm thinking mostly about the locations and characters found in NieR, even minor ones. There are a few references to the Drakengard series though, as far as I know.

If you can, you shoud really play through at least NieR and get the 4 endings before getting Automata. Not only to fully understand this one, but also to enjoy NieR without spoiling it for yourself. Despite having a few minor issues here and there, it's a very unique game that everybody should get to experience. If you don't have any of the previous gen consoles on which NieR was released (PS3 / X360), just call it a day, watch a lore summary video and get Automata on PC, you'll understand 95% of it anyway.
