Review, You wont want to read this :P
So, i played up until just after the little suicide pact to kill the big things after the first boss, so far i have a few opinions, you won't like them but i'm not worried by fanboy downvotes

Nier is overhyped, everyone knew that though, fanboys will love the game, most people will find it fairly generic

The first portion of the game up until defeating the first boss, i had to use my melee attack a massive 3 times, and those 3 swings were during the boss battle, for the first portion of the game i could have used electrical tape to hold down my L1 button and not had my experience diminished

Graphically speaking the game is ok i guess, as a PC gamer its hard to be "impressed" by graphical quality that you've seen in numerous places before, level design was pretty bland for the section i played but i apreciate that this is mostly a tutorial section, that being said its all you had to win me over and it didn't, and thats before you mention the horrid 30FPS during cutscenes, what is this, 2006?

Audio, the music, what little i've heard was fairly decent, noting stood out as bad and the sound effects seemed ok, someone actually put some work in to that so i'm impressed, the voice acting, well i get that they are robots but even for robots the acting was bland, i couldn't tell if it was just the voice actors being bored or not

Gameplay, having only experienced the first section of the game i can't comment on the rest, but it must have changed genre about 6 times, there was 3rd person, top down, sode scrolling shooter, vertical shooter, twin stick shooter and platformer that i counted, the constant changes between genres was jarring, on top of that it didn't really do any of them particularly well, it wasn't engaging and it makes it feel like nobody could settle on what this game was meant to be

All in all i would probably give this game a 5 out of 10, if you can pick it up for cheap during the christmas sale then its alright, but at £40 i expect a little more, although considering square-enixs love of mediocre games recently, i can't say i'm overly surprised

If you like constant transitions between genres and generic gameplay then you might enjoy this game, if you're expecting something more engaging then you probably should look elsewhere

Yes but NieR ._.

It's a masterpiece, seriously, you have to play more than the tutorial ^^
You haven't even scratched the game yet, your review has no credibility, these aren't issues you're naming but rather a couple of "minigames" that increases gameplay as you get used to them ? It's really a third person exploration game o.o Not any other genre!

Play on hard if you think the game is too easy ^^

30 FPS during cutscenes - does it really matter ? You spend what... maybe 8 minutes in cutscenes over a whole 30 hours of gameplay ?

The audio, well, you haven't experienced the amusement park :D It's amazing, I promise!

The voice acting is also pretty good once you start seeing more people..

As I've said, you have no credibility, you played for an hour, it's hard to form an opinion on a three volumes epic when you've read the first few pages of the first book :o

These aren't minigames though, its the game not settling on a genre and going with it, so yes thats an issue, these aren't optional parts of the game, you're forced to play these sections

As you seem to point out, these "minigames" don't go away so its an ongoing issue the game doesn't resolve, meaning its present for the entire game, if i had played 400 hours it would still be the same net result as far as gameplay goes

I said the audio was good apart from the voice acting

And its not about the game being too "easy" it was more a case of half the combat system not even being required during the tutorial, even the bulletproof enemies can be killed without using melee :P

And yes, as a PC gamer who is used to a minimum 60FPS framrate when your FPS gets cut in half randomly its very jarring, the cutscenes fail to look smooth at all, there only being a few doesn't excuse the fact that the developers cut corners

You seriously need to play it more :) It's a very rewarding experience after the first few hours, I agree it might be hard to get into if you consider these things issues, but give it a chance ^^ It's far from being overrated. And frankly, if cutting some corners allows a developer to release a game rather than not, why the hell not ? You work for your money as well (I guess) and you like to get the most bang for your buck (I guess!)

And yes, these are minigames :p As with the cutscenes, you spend maybe 8 minutes of your thirty hour playthrough into them ? And they mesh together well, it's all the same controls, you have the same abilities (or almost), your chips remain equipped.

And yeah, maybe you can kill most enemies with your pod in the tutorial, it.. doesn't really work like that in real gameplay though it is possible to spec into it ^^

Anyways, I don't want to fight over it, but there's really no reason to not dive into it, despite some issues, the game is very solid ^^ Specially now that you supposedly bought it, you'd be missing out imho. :)

Don't bother trying to convince him. The fact the he played through the prologue using nothing but pod bullets then quit and wrote a "review" on the forums proves he doesn't actually give a ♥♥♥♥ and is just funnyposting to anger people who actually bought the game.

Well, if you don't like the game, ok, no problem.
"De gustibus non disputandum est".

But on this, for example:

Upgrading powers doesn't change the gameplay, the story doesn't change the gameplay, the ending won't change the gameplay, thats something thats going to be there from beginning to end...

It's wrong on so many levels... you didn't see all the complete gameplay, so, fine if it didn't impress you on the prologue, but this is just you personal opinion and yes, there are changes later in the game that unvalidate some parts of your "review".

So this guy played the demo on PS4?

Eh, it seems the tutorial was enough to break the dude, give him some slack.

So... Why didn't you play on Easy with the auto plug-ins equipped? I mean, the game pretty much plays itself then. You don't even have to tape down the L1 button!

The title of this thread should be the review of nier automata prologue. Not you wont want to read it. I stopped reading when you say "suicide part" and judged your review with your 1st paragraph as well. Like you judge this game with the prologue part.

Wait...

How are you playing the game?

Isn't it Steam-only?

If you're playing the PS4 version, why review here?

No, seriously, I want to know. Don't be a ♥♥♥♥♥ by avoiding the question. I don't like calling people pirates, but if you avoid the question, then you are one.

I was under the impression you can't review something you don't own on Steam? I mean if you want to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ here that's fine but it's not technically a review - more like a first impressions wall of text.

Yours with sincerity.

And in my personal opinion, something i've seen other people agree with, is that this game does not show itself off to be anything other than a fairly generic mish mash of different game genres, and thats a problem
Is it? Why? As long as the experience itself is well-rounded (which in this case, it is), why would it matter whether it's a straightforward representative of one genre or a mash-up of several genres?
