Dusk Lore Jacob Theory

I was playing through the game again and I got to thinking about the lore behind the cult leader, Jakob. During his boss fight he tells you that "you will be my final test" and his attacks are noticeably similar to your own. I think that Jakob went through much of the same tests that Dusk dude did and wants the power of Nyarlethotep for his own, but he won't give it to him. After defeating Jakob, Nyarlethotep tells you that Jakob was worthy, but you were better, which to me means that we've gone through exactly the same steps Jakob did but we didn't have to wait around for a rival to test our strength. I thought this was a really interesting way of explaining the "complete the circle" theme. What did you all think about Dusk's story?

I'd say it's fairly obvious Nyarlathotep told Jakob he'd give him power if he did all he did. However, I suspect Jakob may not have actually gone through the same trials the Dusk dude did; the impression I got was that Jakob was a nerd obsessed with first person shooter games and Nyarlathotep was his chance to finally be the cool guy. His first test was leading the cult and getting them to commit atrocities, and his reward for that was being able to fight just like the hero in an FPS game. A fairly different path from the Dusk dude who was already a skilled gunman and never led a cult (and fights like that because he IS literally the main character in an FPS game).

As for the trials and rewards part; I still suspect none of the stuff Jakob or the military does is actually relevant. Nyarlathotep is a trickster and loves toying with humans. That includes convincing them to do horrible things in exchange for power that he could just give or take whenever he wants to begin with. Him calling Jakob or the Dusk dude "worthy" is like a cruel man starving dogs until they attack each other and keeping the one that survives.

yeah, jakob was considered worthy and even held nyarlathotep's power at one point. thatgs revealed by the dark god's monologue. "he was worthy you know and he accomplished so much, until you came along" he was the strongest until you came along essentially, he was worthy we were just stronger

If it was possible to get that strong IRL, wars would be fought by strafejumping while shooting a bazooka and carrying 50 spare missiles on your belt and 50 more in your backpack.
