BETTER THAN QUAKE
Blasphemy... But I mean it.

While waiting for Dusk episode 3, I recently replayed all episodes of Quake. Both games are obviously very similar in terms of speed, mechanics, gunplay but overall I think, Dusk is the better one.

Not only are the enemies more fun, but the way the levels are designed, shifting in tone and escalating towards the conclusion is really exceptional... Especially considering the limited grafics.

So kudos to the dev(s). You have not only successfully referenced Quake, IMO you have outdone it! I hope this translates to a success in sales as well (allthough you "hate" money) and that it will create a...

... cult following 😜

I don't believe they have outdone quake. Both games offer a quite different experience still.

Besides DUSK ain't without faults even thought the downsides are kind of minor.
I would say they are about on par with each other. There are some things Quake does that I where also in DUSK, and some aspects of DUSK that I wish vanilla Quake had - honestly that's why I play both games.. .everyday

Do you only play vanilla quake?? No mods?? If you like to get some new weapons, more gore and some new gameplay, you should look at the mod Quake 1.5 on moddb. Its coming 1/1/19...... Its even give us bosses in episodes 2-4 :)
Oh, I didn't know about Quake 1.5... It sounds pretty cool, thanks for the info. But yes apart from arcane dimensions I mostly prefer vanilla Quake, or vanilla style maps.

I'd say the same, but I'm not a big fan of Quake (which, for me, is a big step-down from Doom, at least in single-player) in the first place.

Dusk is a good game, but far far away from a perfect game like Quake (1)

Quake isn't perfect.
The last episode of Quake is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

so the game w/ the benefit of 20+ years of additional introspection and technical progress is better, you say?

This. Dusk has had time to look back at classics to see what was good and improve upon. Dusk is definetely faster than quake and I do enjoy some of the level design of Dusk more than Quake but at the same time, there is something about Quake you simply can't beat. Both are great but Dusk has had a lot of time to get things right. And the thing about making a good shooter (That Triple AAA doesnt seem to get) is that all you need to make a great shooter is original creative olorful levels, fast speed and movement, sastifying weaponry, creative fun to fight enemies, and you're good to go. It's a formula that is pretty hard to mess up unless you're trying to make a boring game like Battlefield or countless other bland shooters of today that try too hard on story and realism which makes them boring. They may look better, but gameplay wise, old school shooters surpass them greatly. That's why I'm not surprised that recent games like the new Doom, Dusk, Ion Maiden, Amid Evil ETC. are all getting really good reviews and you can bet that Doom Eternal is gonna be another positive megahit because these games understand what "Fun" is.

Dusk is simply a craft that has been perfected by guys that understand what a fun shooter is all about.

1998 and '99 wasn't just the golden age for fast paced action shooters like Quake, it also gave us excellent "boring" tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and SWAT 3. Sadly, nobody makes those games anymore either. Battlefield and Call of Duty try to keep one foot in both camps and stand on very tall stilts, and I don't find that balance very appealing. VOID Interactive's upcoming "Ready or Not" might see the return of the classic tactical shooter though so I haven't given up hope for "boring" games to enjoy their own renaissance.

I fully agree!

I agree. Quake walked so Half Life and Doom 2016 could run. Dusk feels like the game Quake wanted to be but couldn't due to technical limitations of the time. Now if we're asking which is better Dusk or Blood (it's other huge influence) now that's a much harder question to answer

Umm, yeah idk about that. Quake has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better music/sound/atmosphere and level design to me. DUSK is cool though, and very good beyond episode 1.

Better music? Aside from a few tracks most of the music of Quake is just ambient sounds which helps set the mood but I don't remember most of it except for the theme where I can list so many memorable tracks from Dusk like Keepers of the Gate, Handgun Harmony, Reflections of Violence and so on
