Ion Fury is a close 2nd.
It's part of a trio of top tier retro fps that includes Dusk, Ion Fury and Amid Evil. They are all equally great... but if I have to pick one, I'd go with Ion Fury for authenticity. It's actually a proper build engine game (even though running on source port). While Amid Evil and Dusk are running on Unreal and Unity respectively and they have that phony feeling to them.
Amid Evil is prbly best for Hexen
Ion Fury for Duke/Doom
and Dusk for Quake/Half Life
But I put a hard gap between the old games and the new. For me Dusk and Prodeus are the two games of the new-era Boomer-Shooters that feel amazing. Shout out to HROT, Amid Evil, Ion Fury, and even Wrath (I haven't played Overkill, so maybe even that?), but Dusk and Prodeus really have just stood out as the cream of a particularly-grand crop.
It's cool, but i think that DooM is better
