Sound Detection Scale
Good rule of thumb to go by, in regards to movement speed-to-sound detection. Note this can vary by a little bit but it is a good base to go by. Also note that Pumas, Wolves, and Lions nearby can cause animals to become alert or spooked, making it appear that you are the one who spooked them. These predators are also often times hard to spot, adding to the confusion.

ATV - 275+ yards/ 250+ meters for most animals

Running - Safe to about 275 yards/250 meters until some animals start hearing you... scaling down to 190 yards/175 meters when almost everything will hear you

Walking - 165 yards/150 meters for some animals to hear you, 80 yards/75 meters for most or all to hear you

Fast Crouch - 80 yards/75 meters for some to hear you, 45 yards/40 meters for most/all
*Scent becomes important at this range

Slow Crouch - 45 yards/40 meters for some, 25 yards/25 meters for most/all
*Visibility becomes important at this range

Fast Prone - 25 yards/25 yards for some, 20 yards/20 meters for most/all

Slow Prone - Between 5 and 15 yards/meters generally

***Note this is assuming you have the sound reduction perks, since that is something nearly everyone goes for***

regarding sound, if you hear a animal call any idea approx. how far way they are? or if you see just the sound wave of an animal but cant actually hear them?

Nope. ATV automatically spooks anything within 300+ meters. It's basically "off the scale" lol

Thanks for the post. This question gets asked repeatedly; or other questions get asked repeatedly which show that the questioner does not understand walking/running and the sounds' effects on wildlife. Even as a young boy I understood I wouldn't find anything to shoot by crashing through the brush; but I guess some people never got out into the brush in real life.

What is your experience with hills or obstacles?
To me it feels like animals still can hear me through hills.
But maybe they see or smell me through hills, this could be possible too!

To mee it feels not realistic if an animal casts a warning if I am still behind a hill.
I think they do not calcualte hills technically...

Great tip, but don't forget that if you're accompanied with your bloodhound dog he will sometimes growl (when around dangerous predators) or whine when near other animals.

Don't know if the dog sounds alert the animal.

Don't forget about your smell too (odour detection) because i was often detected slow crawling and was at distance farther than precited.

Totally agree with your numbers. I wish the game accounted for hills and other items in your way. Example - Sneaking in to an area with dense vegetation in between you and your prey, doesn't seem to matter if there's a lot of cover between you.

When the crucial info isn't explained in any tutorial, this guy comes to the rescue. Well done my friend

wait, what? i finally reached level 60 and I'm just finding out there's fast and slow modes for both crouching and prone ? :steamfacepalm:

Same here, sometimes feels like animals see you through hills and such.

Great game, but it can feel like a crouching/crawling simulator at times! Depending on how sensitive the animal is, you can get away with walking, and then when you get a warning call, immediately crouch to calm the animal down. Then you can crawl to a tree, bush, etc for cover and proceed from there accordingly. I don't believe this works for running because by the time they are alerted it seems to result in an automatic flee.

I'm reasonably new and this is great info and is listed more concisely than the few other spots I've found it so thank you! One thing I found the atv useful for is just hauling around and capturing outpost and lookout spots. I presume animal will eventually make their way back to their zones ... I hope?
