I couldn't break even with the cost of licenses as they ran in real time. So, when I only have an hour or two to commit to the game, I was spending more money to fish that I was actually making back.
They also started monetizing everything like storage space and perma-licenses, never bringing back a way to earn Gold/Bait Coins in game in any meaningful way. Same reason I didn't bother playing the Hunter classic for long. Felt like I was being nickle-and-dimed.
Russian Fishing 4 turned out to be a far better and far more realistic fishing game.
J´ais play from the first day and j´avais almost 8000 hours of play, all the equipment and j´avais invest enough money jusqu´a what j´en is tired of making me squeeze like a lemon. By dint of nerfed their cards and making everything pay (premium, baitcoins, unlimited licenses) they themselves killed their game.
This game was interesting for 2 years (jusqu´a end 2017) after they had the disease of the dolard and the oldest players (like me) left the game very quickly.
Disastrous support, poor team management and the game is dead. They have released a new game <<<Fisherman>> at 50 euros that will sink very quickly if managed by the same team.
The FP game was great, the team was a disaster.
Also because dev team was always way more interested in squeezing the crap out of their player base than taking care of the game.
Now honnestly, when COTW came out, and I was in touch with other playing FP, but also the hunter classic, I was very very doubtful of marketing plan and at what speed and what price they would add DLC's to COTW.
I grabbed the 2019 version last weekend, on a serious sale (almost 1/2 price), and honnestly, I'm fine with that, and at same time I grabbed a few more small DLC's on sale as well.
While I see your point in "similarities" about grind, the big difference is that you can actually play COTW for only 1/2 an hour if you want, while FP (at least back in the days) that was a killer for you if you were not the owner of a lifetime license on lakes.
In COTW you can just go out there and shoot 1-2 animals and call it a day, while in FP you really really have to pile up serious hours to break even on your lake license.
And honnestly, to me for now at least, it feels still less "go here you'll find that here" than FP was.
COTW to me is still less a spreadsheet game than FP is.
Yes there are hours, just like IRL I guess to hunt certain animals. but to me the comparison just stop here.
DOOOOOOOOO-IT !!!!!!!!
FP is a much more "progressive" game (forgive the term).
You start with a tiny rod > reel > line & have to catch tiny fish...
After catching tiny fish, you get prize $$$ and buy a bigger rod > reel > line.
^ that is lake 1 ~ repeat at lake 2 & you unlock a LOT more places & a lot more gear.
I was expecting HCOTW to be a lot like that...
ie:
HERE IS a .22LR & .410 shotty - go get a rabbit & a squirrel.
GOOD JOB - here's a .20 gauge shotty - go get a pheasant & quail
GOOD JOB - here's a .12 gauge shotty - go get a duck & goose & turkey.
Oh well... maybe they will make a LEARN TO HUNT DLC someday. :)
A lot has changed in FP since I started playing & since you guys quit.
Might be worth another look via youtube w/ 2019 as qualifier vs download & play.

*NOTE: I typically value my game purchases at $.50~$1 per hour.
ie: $20 game should give me 20 hours of play time - like the last 3 Tomb Raiders (always on steam sale / wishlist) or COD / BF / GTA 3+misc+4-5 / PROJECT CARTS 1 & 2, etc
My .02 $
If you had been around when they shoot themselves in the foot, you would know...
Basically, I'm not usually a F2P player, but FP made me understand why I prefer a game purchase over F2P (or P2W as some may say).
Same as EvE Online made me know why I will never be able to enjoy much a subscription based game.
Indeed and btw, try to do that in FP forum...
I think I never had more PM in steam back in the days when competition was incoming for FP, and devs couldn't stand to see any thread mentionning an other game's name... yeah Forum moderators in FP also was part of a very displeasing part of FP, and an other reason to stop to play it.
RE: Geronimo - I'm just hoping that SOME of my many FP friends might be playing this game. If they are - I hope they chime in to this thread & we can play HCOTW together.
I'm not a fake / shill marketing d-bag for FP, so please don't insinuate. :)
FP was my 1st F2P game, and as I said above:
*NOTE: I typically value my game purchases at $.50~$1 per hour.
ie: $20 game should give me 20 hours of play time - like the last 3 Tomb Raiders
Since I got 1500+ hours of fun from FP, I was happy to spend some CHING on the THING.
Fishing zones tightened up, bait and lure use became more important and having the right equipment combo is almost a requirement. All I wanted to do is relax and catch big fish, instead I would find myself going through my tackle box and maintaining my equipment for half the time.
I can catch bream and bass on a cheap zebco rod and real all day long IRL. Why is that impossible to do in FP!!?
Sorry, Kinda got upset... again.
It's up to you to know what you want.
I want to make money too & so do you... we are all capitalists, right?
However, if you are a "mature" gamer & you are used to getting a FULL GAME with "unlockables" for $40 vs. buying a $20 game w/ a bunch of DLC for an extra $40 - ya, marketing people suck b-alls & they will just keep squeezing your b-alls to milk as much cash out of your b-alls as possible & they don't even realize that squeezing our b-alls - makes us all hate them.
RE: I used to play FP when it was EASY & just want to relax...
I hear that from people all the time, but I've enjoyed the added challenge. I also started playing while the game default was EASY mode & now it is more like NORMAL mode.
It would be nice if there was EASY mode for people who want that - but that needs to have limits - like none of their EASY mode fish could get posted on the leader boards & they can't share markers or stuff like that...
Anyway - I'm still waiting to see some of my FP friends playing this game. I found one buddy from FP & we tried MP / multi-player w/ several other peeps & we didn't see much value in HCOTW MP. I watched some vids from JaxyBeard about MP & it still isn't very useful to me - yet (because I am a noob hunter ATM).
It sounds like NEED ZONES are uniquely generated per player in their SP (single player) game and that more or less explains why I haven't seen a NEED ZONE map or UBERsheet style spreadsheet like FP has with MARKERS & TOD (time of day) tips for each individual species.
That's something I am trying to figure out. Like....
When I feel like ducks, rabbits, moose or XXX - where do I go & what TOD?
RE: When I feel like ducks, rabbits, moose or XXX - where do I go & what TOD?
I guess that's going to come from more time in MP w/ more of the great people I met - just like I learned all of the places & times in FP.
