As Redliner has already said, only boxes can be placed in the vehicle extensions. This applies to the large and medium extensions. The only exception is the small extension for bicycles and motorcycles, as this is too small for a box.
Each is bigger than the other.
You can carry any chest that weighs with loot in it under 80kg on your shoulder slowly.
You can drag any chest of any weight in YOUR flag zone.
It is like pick up and place, pick up and place as you walk.
You can them into the storage racks on the vehicles but not the small motorcycle rack.
All it is, is another animation you can't cancel out of to get you killed faster either by another person (in PvP) or by a random Puppet (In PvP or PvE).
I actually think the racks are pretty helpful. In the additional module I have my essentials, 2 metal chests filled to the roof with everything I need, the vehicle has "needs" and open space so that I can quickly unload and disappear or take the refrigerator out of the vehicle or generator, etc.
If you organize everything properly, you almost can't do without them. They can also significantly increase the capacity for vehicles like the "WW".
You can also drag&drop chests, you do not need to pick them first up.
The atv can even hold 2. One inside the main inventory and 1 in the outside inventory...
You mentioned you went straight to the improvised wardrobe. So I was explaining that there are 3 different types of portable storage.
For bases there is also the storage shelf. It holds equal to the wardrobe or close to it.
There are also weapon racks for walls and floors that will hold guns.
Warning don't build place weapon racks until base upgrades are finished cause the racks can be destroyed during upgrade with their weapons.
Single players can spawn almost every in game item for their own experimentation and figuring how or what does or does not work.
For trial and error or just learning the game.
Using any admin commands will temporarily disable achievements but a relog turns them back on.
If you don't want to use those spawned items there are ways in the game to destroy those also!

SCUM - Patch 0.9.530.85517
I can feel your frustration; however, I must respectfully disagree. We nearly always place chests containing various items (gasoline canister, vehicle repair kits, looted items, food, backup weapons, etc.) into external storage on Quads and other vehicles all the time (including cars). It is the same process as placing a chest directly into a Rager, Liaka, or WolfsWagen; there is no real difference. The extra storage unit is simply another container into which you place chests.
As an example, one of the first things we do when returning to vehicles after looting is to take a chest out and place it on the ground (can be from the vehicle, or from extra storage). We load the loot into the chest, then place it back into the vehicle (or external storage). There is no extra step and no extra animation.
Since bicycles can not fit a chest in their additional storage, you can either place the items into the extra storage directly or you can place two improvised backpacks to be used like chests. The extra storage units for bicycles really are a game changer; I ride a bicycle regularly around the map and was always playing Tetris with items before the extra storage was added to the game.
Placing chests into vehicles has been around for a long time and it is a common way of increasing the amount of items a vehicle can carry. It is also a great way or organising your items.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding your response?
