As Hortensia said, yes! You can build your own Home or even a Heavy Defense, whatever you like. You have the most success on specific servers that have raised the building limits. But even without such servers you can create beautiful buildings. A large number of components are already available for this and there are even a few planned for the future of the game.
Here are a few examples of the possibilities (build without limits in single player):

Now, there's a WIP base building system using modular base elements that players can freestyle build to suit their needs (to an extent).
In single and multiplayer you can lock the doors and barricade the windows of a prebuilt building but you won't be able to build anything in it except a storage chest which can be lock picked or simply dragged away by raiders
^ This is good advice; With setgodmode=true in SP you can quickly build a prototype to iron out any problems before you do the real build.
To satisfy your curiosity:
They are called puppets because they are “controlled” by a technologically advanced control unit. The so-called BCU, which the prisoner also has, is a high-performance device that connects to the spinal cord and can therefore give electronically impulse-controlled "commands" to the lifeless bodies to "Animate" it again.
For example, if the BCU were destroyed, the puppet would simply sink back to the ground, lifeless.
A zombie, on the other hand, is a non-living creature, roughly speaking and can do that without BCU. While the terminology also applies, strictly speaking Puppet is pretty literal. :)
However, this topic is now a few months old and has served its purpose, so I'm closing it here. If you still have questions, you can open a new topic at any time.
