SCUM

Is SCUM just about being stuck in a crafting menu and trying to juggle items?
When I think of survival, I think of playing a game that is trying to kill you. I admit, I only have a few hours into the game, so please tell me if I am missing something. But I really don't like the early game with no inventory and the absolute lack of actually fun gameplay. For 75-90% of my playtime I was forced into a crafting MENU to put together basic stuff. That's not what I came for. I came for a game that wants me to play it and survive, not force me to sit there and figure out a crafting menu for every little thing. To craft even basic crap to survive you have to juggle 20 different items (a bit of an exaggeration, but still not good) with an inventory and crafting system that really feels like the game is just a menu. I was under the impression the hard part was nutrition and keeping your character alive, but the amount of time it took just to juggle items to get a spear and bow was ridiculous. I don't want to play a menu game. I want to survive. When 1 basic item takes 3 steps in a menu to make it just feels like I'm missing out on experiencing the world around me to survive in. Of my few hours, most of it was sitting there battling a menu, not fighting puppets or PvP. Is this game just about messing around in a crafting menu or is there real survival gameplay once you get a character past the basic stuff? If this is the beginning of the game, what the heck is there to look forward to with base building and farming for food? More menus and sitting there not doing anything fun? I want to fight puppets and players and robots, not sit there trying to get all the materials together for 20 minutes of menu time just to be able to deal damage. I apologize if I seem annoyed, but I am really put off by not being able to play because I'm standing there in a menu.

EDIT: To clarify, I am not against crafting in a survival game. I know it's literally part of the genre. The thing I am against is the crafting menu being 50% or more of the gameplay at any given time. The amount of steps just to get all the sticks together to make a bow and quiver to be able to deal real damage to a puppet was ridiculous without any real inventory space. So maybe my gripe is with inventory. I don't know. Just the first hours of gameplay were not as fun as I was hoping for. The challenge of the game was not where I imagined it.

Edit 2: After some cooling off time and reading the responses, I think I just really was having a bad day. I appreciate all the replies that encouraged just playing the game and gaining experience. I was flustered and overwhelmed and you all have been right. I need more time to learn and should just be trying to play the game and once I get more time in, most of these steps won't be as grueling. I'll give it more time before I dismiss it and I'll stop complaining about an experience I simply have not truly experienced yet. I appreciate all the replies!

Once you get the hang of it, it becomes pretty simple. I always start by making a bag to carry things, followed by a bow and some arrows. Once I have those two things, I begin looting for other essentials. This game takes time and patience, which is what makes it so satisfying.

Klingt sehr deutsch.

There is a big emphasis on management.. you love it or hate it. Personally, I love the tedious, grindy nature of the inventory system. Something satisfying about organizing a chest full of gear.

I'll admit though I remember when I first started playing saying exactly what you are now. Once I learned the system and got through that curve I really started enjoying the game. But yea, late game/early game you're going to have to eat, piss, ♥♥♥♥, load ammo, water the garden, fuel the generator, eat more, drink more, piss again, then you can leave to go do whatever it was originally. :D Then probably realize you forgot screwdrivers half way, turn around. Repeat process.

Stick with it a bit longer.

I understand where you're coming from. The UI is quite involved.

Once you're familiar with the UI and established with decent gear, you won't be spending as much time in the inventory. When you've learn the UI system thoroughly, you can get in and out of menus much quicker and it won't seem so all consuming.

There are a few shortcuts too. Watch a couple "tips and tricks" videos.

You have just scratched the surface of how hard it is to stay alive and thrive in SCUM.

it takes like 5 mins. U start with stone knife then stone axe. Just play a server with welcome package but tbh, sounds like its not a game for u if the first crafting of a bow takes too long for your patience.

See, eat drink, piss etc yes, craft basic items yes. But other more in depth things are optional. Cooking farming etc if very much micro management. I can understand people not wanting to do that stuff and to be fair, you dont have to, its optional, but complaining about having to collect sticks to craft a bow and some arrows?.. Curious what other survival games OP is playing..

I think it's extremely helpful to know what items you need to craft each item which is why there's a menu. I've recently stepped back and tried DayZ (no menus , no idea what I need to craft anything) and I missed everything that we have in Scum. Without the UI I'd be completely lost. Scum does it better 👍way better .

Once you git gud, every time you spawn in new, you can get a stone knife, a bow and arrows, a simple quiver and a simple backpack inside 10 minutes. After that, you don't spend nearly as much time crafting stuff. Unless you want to.
