why can't I "drive" ATV
I have serviced an ATV. It now has all 4 wheels, lights and a front grill. I've put half a tank of gas in it. But I still cannot get the "drive" prompt. The only prompts I get are 1) fill/drain fuel and 2) nudge forward/backward and nudge left/right prompts.

I've put a jack under the the ATV so I can service it. I cannot remove any body parts to see if the battery needs to be replaced/recharged.

I've put mobile phone batteries and the blue/black batteries in my back pack (and hands), stand next to the ATV and do not get the "charge battery" prompt.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to get the ATV running?

Thanks,

Ian

Hello :),

On the RIV, the ATV in SCUM, the battery is on the back of the vehicle under the seat. Make sure that a battery and all other required parts are installed because as long as a part that is needed to drive is missing, you cannot operate the vehicle but can only move it externally.

When the vehicle is on the vehicle jack, look for blue glowing spots, these show you that an item is not installed and can be installed in that spot. Red glowing means that a part is damaged.

To add to what Deathwhisper mentioned, if you have everything (parts) the prompt 'should' appear when you hover the cursor over the seat from above. Drive will be toward the front of the seat. Here's a pic of where to find the battery, credit to Jolie Rouge:

I find it easiest to just literally lie down next to it and look up.

When the ATV is on the jack only, there are no 'red' items that indicating servicing is needed.
I've repaired all items that were 'red'. Now, only a few 'blue' items show. How do I check if the ATV has or does not have a battery?

When I put the mouse over the ATV, I only get the "hand' mouse icon/prompt, even at the front of the ATV.

When I lie down and look up, I see a 'flashing blue rectangular' item under the seat. Is this what you are referring to as the battery location and the flashing blue means the battery is missing?

Thanks,

Mission accomplished.

I had a car battery in my inventory and was able to successfully install it. The battery is dead but I've a few mobile phone batteries I use to charge the ATV up so I can start it.

Here is what I believe should be an entertaining commentary on my one month game play in Scum.

To learn the game mechanics, I ended up making the town of Prkno my testing grounds. I've boarded up a house, put locks on the door and built storage containers in the house. Why? This is the humorous part. As I been learning the game mechanics, loot keeps respawning in town. In the time I've been here, the 4 wheels, 4 doors, side panels, bumpers for a Rager have been spawned. I put all those parts in my storage containers for the time I decide to get a Rager. Among the many other items that have spawned are a large gas generator, two small generators, pots, pans, electric and gas stove tops and the list goes on. If this keeps up, my character will eventually have everything he needs to live comfortably. There is an ample supply of food in and around town. A pharmacy, a store and and ATM. I use the police station to practice lock picking. I'm laughing to myself. Why should I leave? It's a dangerous world outside town and here I am king! BTW, I'm in single player mode.

Thanks for the help with the ATV!

Cheers,

Ian

Great to see that you've managed to get the ATV up and running.
Btw that story was an entertaining read. In SCUM, improvising and thinking on your feet is key. You never know what you might find :)

First time I'm using the ATV. It appears to be a bear magnet.

I went to the scrap yard to pick up tires for a Volkswagen I'm trying to put together. On my way back from the scrap yard, I stop to gas up at the only gas station a short distance from the brick factory in grid B0. I'm in 3rd player mode watching from the back of my character because I find it is easier to drive/control the ATV. Just as I'm getting off the ATV, I see a bear come from behind my character and take a swipe at my character. I have my character run towards the tuck shop and jump through the window, narrowly getting away from the bear. After waiting a long time inside the tuck shop listening to the bear growl in the bushes behind the shop, I sneak out front, jump on the ATV, it starts immediately and I drive off at a breakneck speed, driving like a madman and barely missing several big trees. Whew, that was close!

I make it back to Prkno in one piece.

I've been in Prkno to learn the game mechanics and, now that I have the ATV, I decide it's time to stop being King of Prkno. I leave and make my way north to the town of Veliki Tabor in grid C1.

The house I choose as a temporary base in Veliki Tabor is the first house coming into the town on the road from the south east side. More often then not, the ATV coughs and wheezes like an old man and does not start up right away. Given the noise and time it can take to start up the ATV, being on the outskirts of the town is unlikely to attract the zombies like it did while I was in Prkno. But I did not factor in bears.

A cargo drop notice tells me one is on it's way close by in 10 minutes. I jump on the ATV, make my way to the drop site, quickly dispatch 6-7 zombies. This is a first for me. The drop occurs, I get inside and I successfully lock pick all locks. This also a first for me. All that training in Prkno is paying off big time.

I'm feeling pretty smug the short ride back to town. As I get close to town, I back off on the throttle and slowly approach the house I'm using as a temporary base. You know, I don't want to attract any zombies, right! I've got a sh1t-ass grin on my face from my haul and for EVERYTHING just going right this time. Again, I'm playing 3rd player mode and watching my character from behind. The ATV reaches my front door and I'm must about to turn it off. WHAM, a bear appears from behind, swipes at and hits my character. I hit the W throttle and the ATV hurtles through the main street in the town. How I managed this without the ATV hitting a building was sheer luck.

I reach the other side of town and back off the throttle a bit because no bear can run that fast, right? Wrong! WHAM, the bear comes out of nowhere and hits my character again. Now my character is bleeding and I see blood drops dripping down the screen. I hit the gas and scream out of town at full throttle. The ATV is careening out of control and hits a tree moments later. WHAM, a third swipe, the F'ing bear is on my character. That is one fast bear.

My fingers are trembling on the keyboard....I can't die now after having just had my first perfect performance at a cargo drop.

So to hell with trying to stay on the road. I'm now a madman desperately driving the ATV straight across the country side, going east. I can hear the bear behind me. I never knew bears could keep up with an ATV on full throttle! Anyways, I'm now racing through a big wide open field and make a big, steady circle to avoid flipping the ATV. I want to to make my way back to town, to the safety of my character's boarded up and door locked house.

Now blood is openly flowing on the screen, I don't know how seriously injured my character is and don't know if he can make it back home. He has to to stop, but when and where? I see a loft in the distance and pitch the ATV towards it. I almost make it to the loft. But my fingers are trembling on the keyboard and the ATV hits a tree standing a short way from the loft. No time to back up. I have my character leap off the ATV and run the short distance to the loft. He misses the first and second try at climbing the ladder. Really? How F'ing hard can it be to climb a ladder to safety??? I'm expecting the bear to be all over my character. But my luck holds the third try at the ladder and my character is finally up and safe in the loft.

My character look around. There is no bear to be seen or heard. It turns out my character was not badly hurt. He can count his blessing for this second close encounter with a bear. Maybe getting an ATV was not such a good idea after all!

My character needs to recover and now I myself really need a coffee. So I shut the computer down and recover from my close brush from what seemed like an almost certain virtual death.

I have only one question. How do I kill all F'ing bears on Scum island?

Cheers, from a keyboard survivalist,

Ian

Bears are indeed a dangerous encounter on the island and can take quite a beating. One encounter that I will always remember is from a while ago.

I explored the castle ruins, in good spirits and with a few useful things in my luggage, I wanted to walk back to my vehicle that was at the foot of the hill through the southern exit. Looking around the corner into the face of a bear, I had no time to react, it swung and sent me straight to the ground. I decided to just stay lying there for as long as possible and that was my salvation. With a satisfied grin, the bear marched away while I stared into the sky, waiting, before I swung myself up and was able to save myself by climbing a nearby ladder. When I finally arrived, I emptied a complete UMP magazine on the bear, which had not impressed it much up to that point, so I followed it with half a magazine.

After another 20 minutes of relaxing and tending to the wounds, I took what I needed from the bear and then hobbled back to the vehicle.

Bears are strong opponents and dangerous, especially if you get too close to them. If you proceed carefully (focus mode - hold down the right mouse button) and are often aware of the noises and surroundings, you can identify a lot of potential danger in advance.

My last bear hunt was near the big hospital with a .338 rifle, which was able to make short work of it. However, rifles like the Kar98, the Mosin Nagant or M1 Garand can also cause serious damage to animals. Aiming at the head is particularly important.

ioob:

I believe you have been blessed by the Scum God!

He just keeps showering you with presents!

Bears can be killed by bullets even arrows if you can get them stuck on something. If you try melee have a real weapon the Katana, Tao or even a bayonet on a rifle. But be forewarned melee with a bear is going to be a grinder, it can go either way!

I fear the bears and the wolf packs more than the mechs!

Wish I still had the picture and the video.
I thought I would amuse the players on the server by walking up behind a bear and playing tickle. I expected them all to see my death recorded.
Yes! The Admin finally gets killed kinda thing lol!

I was sure that the bear would turn and attack.
Instead it stood up look behind sniffed and just slowly walked away, as if to say "Your lucky I ain't hungry"!

bears ain`t really a problem you get plenty of warning with them, and while they take a lot of hits a couple of shots from even a 9mm can kill one, what i really hate the most is wolves, they are always silent i have never heard one before being killed by them, they are for me impossible to hit with any melee weapon, i have tried with every melee weapon in game and none of them have ever worked for me, even with guns they can be very hard to kill, and for me i always get attacked by 2 or 3 at once, i haven`t seen a single wolf in a very long time, personally i would turn them off because for me they are too overpowered, they often hide in bushes and attack by surprise, wolves in real life are nothing like the ones in game.

Grenades wok pretty well, if you have one.

@DeathWhisper - yes, I heard the bear while preparing to loot the main hospital. I was on foot, stopping every few feet to check my surrounding. I heard the growl, looked around and finally saw the bear. I would guess it was a few hundred feet away from me and appeared to be resting/sleeping. I was only equipped with stone age weapons and backed away.

I've heard what I believe were a few bear growls on other occasions while walking through the woods. There too I backed away without any encounter.

Riding the ATV is another matter. There is no way I will hear the bear growl while riding the ATV. The ATV is one noisy ride! As I've learned, the only way I know a bear is around is when it is almost on my character. I imagine being attacked by a bear while riding a bicycle is probably not going to end well for me. I have a bicycle but am now very hesitant to use it. Admittedly a bicycle is relatively quiet compared to the ATV but am I now willing to take the risk?

Like CrankyOldMan and Serilium, I am more concerned about bears and wolves than the mechs. So far, I've only had two encounters with wolves. Each time there was only one wolf. Perhaps it also because, as as Scum newbie, I've yet to try looting a location guarded by mechs.

I'm playing Scum with a FPS of only 17-21. Split second lags occur while driving the ATV and dirt bike as well as when doing the melee dance with zombies. Occasionally, my screen locks up for a second. However, things keep moving in the background during the lag. So I'm trying to anticipate how things will play out a second or two before they actually occur.

LOL - maybe this is the Scum god's way of telling me I should never have left Prkno where I was king of the castle. For my character, life has been good in Prkno. Sure it was not as "exciting" as tripping across the wilds on foot. But then, in a real life survivalist scenario, who among us would give up relative security, comfort and and plenty of food (like my character has in the town of Prkno) for the high risk and probable death that comes with exploring and looting hazardous locations?

I may yet make it to the Scum hall of fame by being the first Scum single player mode character who gives up all Scum fame and fortune and returns to the safety and comfort of Prkno for the remainder of my virtual life.

I'm laughing as I type all of this. In the month I've been playing, my reaction to this game has surpassed all my expectations! I've already gotten more than my money's worth from it and I'm ONLY GETTING STARTED. Kudos to the developers!

Cheers,

Ian

That fps!
You really need to be careful when you are getting ready to go over a bridge, slow way down if your game does not register the bridge there you and your ride will go for a swim which is a death sentence for the ride.
CrankyOldMan Sep 27, 2024 @ 3:22pm
My worse experience with wolves was I had 2 attack me and I lived while I was bandaging a third attacked and now I am 1% after bandaging and waiting for a little longer so I can limp.

Then the shot came.

He told everyone what just happened to me in global. Was surprised I survived the third but said points are points. He did leave me my gear.
