I'm very sure there will be a full explanation the the tutorial on this forum. Cheers
First of all, I would call up the in-game tutorial if you have questions about specific functions. The basic information is provided there, in which you can find out everything you need to know about the mechanics and how they work.
As far as opening locks is concerned, practice makes perfect. That may be easier said than done, but it works, because the more you practice and the more you deal with it, the better you get at opening gold locks that have been placed by players. In the meantime, for example, I am good with silver locks and can already open them quite well, which is a practical advantage for me in many ways. However, I have always done the exercises to improve my skills.
I can especially recommend the practice board for opening locks, as you can learn a lot here without having to sacrifice valuable resources.

If I understand it right you have round about 180 positions - since it is nearly a range of 180° for the lockpick - and 3 seconds to find the right one. If I manage three attempts my chance is 1:60 which is less than 2%. I dont know how that is doable?
Many bashing it don't understand every aspect of the mini game. Others simply don't want to learn, or are not good at it so they demand change.
I think it should stay the same, this is coming from a terrible lock picker.
I have seen this video. Only two or three minutes are relevant but he said "it is hard to explain". I would say it is not to explain since there is no hint so far as i know. It is just luck if you find out of 180 possible positions the right one within 3 seconds without breaking the lockpick.
You are talking about the ingame handbook? It do not give me a hint how to feel where the right position is. And i am using the practice board to find out if there is a system. But the only system I found so far is guessing the right position (out of nearly 180 possible positions) within 3 seconds and without breaking the lockpick. Did I got it right?
But if I can only guess the right position which is just a question of luck to me how is it challenging? Are there hints like sound etc. to find this position easier?
You can only learn if there are aspects to learn like a special sound etc. But it seems to me so far it is just guessing the right position. It is mostly like gambling.
Dont know if there are worse systems but the systems I encounter so far were definetely better because the give you a chance to find the right position.
And I just want to understand it. At first I just tried yesterday with the practice board at lowes difficulty to get an idea how it works. After much more than 100 attempts I watched a few videos but none of them could help me. Thats why I asked the community directly now. I am thankful for every helpful hint. But I didnt get anyone so far :(
