How to build in a cave?
I'm playing solo and decided to build a small base in a cave. I found one of the side of a mountain and placed a flag in it. The problem though is that I'm trying to build a door or wall across the front of the cave and it will not let me (i.e. they show as red). The best I could do was place one side of the wall but when I try to stretch it across the entrance it will not work.

Is it a problem with being on a mountain side and too much angle? Suggestions?

I just had a thought... maybe I should try building inside the cave versus the entrance?

So I'm able to build a wall across the entrance of the cave but I'm unable to place a door frame (singe or double). I'll admit that I do not have much experience building in this game yet (thought a simple hideout could be fun) and therefore am I missing the obvious regarding building inside caves? Would be a pain to have to keep building a wall each time I want it secure.

If you are in PvP game, putting up walls and doors will just attract the attention of players who most likely wouldn't have even realized there was a cave there if you hadn't put them up. And you're unlikely to be able to build enough in-depth defenses in front of a cave, to slow down lockpickers or raiders for more than a few seconds. So, just don't bother. Build storage boxes inside, and someone will find them and loot them too. Make a refuge in there if you want, but it would be wise to just bury your loot in boxes out in the bushes somewhere not too close by, so you can keep your stuff a while.

From my experience I've never had much luck trying to fortify a cave. Some of them have building restrictions that won't allow you to build at all, and when you can the terrain usually won't allow you to build where you want.

It's usually pretty tough to fully secure it, as you can't always cover every gap. Plus caves are marked on the 3rd party maps, so you'll probably have a lot of visitors.

I usually just use caves to camp out for the evening. If I want to build a permanent base I'll find a place out of the way in the middle of the woods or something.

Yeah I wasn't planning to use it to store any good stuff. I just wanted a basic hideout with some protection where I could craft items, do stuff at night, etc without worrying about being insta killed. I saw a recent Youtube where someone mentioned that caves can make nice bases for solo players therefore decided to give it a shot. Now the interesting bit is that I can build a wall inside the cave a bit that fully encloses the entrance (not easily seen from outside) but I cannot place a door frame.....

Wondering if there is some sort of door/door frame tip I'm missing (as mentioned I haven't built much in this game). For example is there a way to place a door in a wall without a frame (I assume not but was hoping I could place a cabin door in it :) )

No, but you could just leave a small section of wall that you can destroy and rebuild quickly. Just seal yourself in at night and break it open in the morning.

Well I'll give it one more chance. If not then I'll build a simple little 4 wall hideout. The idea of a cave was pretty cool though....

Solo or single player? If single player you can just (slowly) build up a fort and then a cabin OR build up a fort around an existing building and fortify the existing building with locks, etc.

Yeah as mentioned I just want a simple hideout with a door and lock to allow me to craft, etc in (some) peace when I'm online. Right now I'm doing the "squirrel life" but always feeling like someone is going to insta kill me when I'm doing such things as crafting :) I had thought a cave would allow me some protection with just one wall/door. I'm going to play around with the cave a bit more tomorrow before giving up though (I'm a bit encouraged that I found a way to build a full wall in the cave -- just would be a pain in the rear to constantly have to rebuild it vs. using a door).

Just a heads up - caves were not designed with base building in mind. If you manage to find a workaround, good for you :)

Actually I think I did find a work around yesterday :) Not the prettiest of bases (had to do some odd angles) but does look like it worked.

Some caves have a high enough cavern that you can build a doorway and door in the interior. It's not noticeable from someone walking by outside unless they decide to enter the cave.

Yeah mine doesn't have that advantage (sticks out like a sore thumb) but as mentioned I just wanted a simple "somewhat safe zone" to do some crafting, etc without fear of being insta killed.

Was that Mr. Feudal"s YouTube vid? I watched it and made notes how to do it. Then I went to the cave he showed us and tried it myself.

What he did (and I) was to put the single door frame in first THEN the walls then the door. It does work his way although my walls on 1 side was a bit longer than his because I couldn't line them up quite like he did. They do blend in though.

I play on single player so I don't really have to worry about people but I do worry about "things that go bump in the night" lol. Anyway I wanted to see if I could do it so I tried. It worked but I have not tried other caves. I may try another one later on in game just for a temp base in my wanderings.

Yep, It was Fuedal's recent video on building in the cave at the south end of Z0/Z1.
