I will say too that they were FAST and came out of nowhere. I heard the howl but had never seen them before and then they were on me in relentless attack.
If I had a gun equipped I maybe could have survived, but was using an axe. Brutal.
To a non-masochist, being butchered helplessly by multiple wolves when you've got nothing to really defend yourself with yet is not considered 'fun' by a lot of people.
Wolves and bears can be heard from afar and don't go to roads and fields, so if you've been "lucky" to be eaten, you've definitely sprinted in woods. Failed so myself a few times...
If you're jogging, they won't spot you and you'll hear them before the encounter.
Have had plenty spawn in open fields and crossing roads in my game. This trio spawned in the field behind Blace and wandered north across the road, until I messed with them. Actually 2 wolves and a Bear. They were walking together.

Nicest way of calling me a lair ever. Thanks.
growl means you're really close, but doesn't mean they've spotted you. Many times while hunting I was jogged in howls direction , then slowed to wallking on growls, and spotted wolves walking somewhere.
Well, you did say "Wolves and bears can be heard from afar and don't go to roads and fields", so, you stand corrected. They do indeed go to roads and fields, so people aren't particularly safe there, either. I've seen it plenty of times myself. And there are a lot of animal spawn points quite close to roads.
It was "they do spawn in open fields" that NC has issue with. Hang around Blace/Dol and see.
If they do attack, run around a tree or rock so they don't have a direct line of sight to you. If you can shoot them once with a bow (even a crappy one) they will usually run off.
They are deadly if you are not prepared and easy when you are. It's fun when you get a good bow or crossbow and become the hunter instead of the hunted.
