Just pay attention maybe you will see a spawned animal ... (I only saw one boar in 60 hrs of playtime in the last few weeks).
The hunting event that you can encounter on the island works as described here:

The tracks that you find give a direction indicator that you must follow. The direction is not absolutely linear but can vary at an angle of around 35-45°. So if the clue says you should go in a NW direction, then use a compass to look for the next clue between north-northwest and west-northwest. Once you have found all the clues, the corresponding animal will appear at the end of the event and you can kill it.
What helps you most when searching for clues is the sound of the animal. In focus mode, you can follow the sound to its source, and you will be able to find the next clue in its immediate vicinity.
You will first have to find the Initial Clue that starts the Event. After that you will need to search for the clues until you are close enough to make them visible in Focus Mode. They do not appear without focusmode.
So you will need to get close to the clue in order to make it visible.
As such I never bother hunting an animal making noise unless I can also see it, otherwise wise I'm wasting my time chasing a phantom animal halfway across the sector only to miss one of the tracking cues before the mini game self terminates without an animal already spawned.
The mini game should work like this, if there is a track laid down, there should be a guaranteed animal at the end of that series of tracks already spawned, meaning you only need to locate it. But they wanted to mess around with animal hunting and try to boost server performance by removing animals assets for cpu cycles or some such.
In any event, your best bet is to always carry at least a revolver if traveling in the northern woods where wolves can spawn out from behind trees, or bow and arrow for chickens which are the most common prey I see now. Also rarely come across deer or goat, and have seen bear too, but they usually stick to their previous spawn areas only much rarer.
Good luck.
I'll have a look later to see if I can do it that way too. If there's a mistake here, I might be able to track it down.
Otherwise, it's quite difficult at the beginning if you haven't got the hang of it yet. But with a little practice, you'll get the hang of it and the hunting events will become much easier and very profitable.
This is not true!
Hunting is worked.
No, that is not the norm. Please refrain from spreading false information.
The hunting event is an option for many people that they like and enjoy doing, of course there are also many who don't like it. But everyone should decide for themselves to what extent and how much they want to do this or learn it.
I'm sorry I'm unclear about what is false. But I'll let you clear up how exactly this is supposed to work. In my experience, with this new system, oftentimes I attempt to find animals using the audio and visual cues only for there to be no animal to be found.
Were animals such as birds not removed from the game to boost performance? Was not the hunting mini game one such effort?
If I am incorrect, I humbly ask what is the correct information. How does the hunting mini game work?
You'll hear the call first. Follow that. As you get closer to the clue you may hear another, and it can be in a slightly different direction. Turn towards the new sound. Keep scanning in focus mode. When you find the hint it leads you to go in the direction it gives. As you continue you should get another animal call. It may be in a different direction than the clue gave, so turn that way. You may even get yet another sound that's in a slightly different direction than the first. Turn towards it. When you find the next clue go in the direction it gives you and repeat the process. Keep following this way and you should find/spawn the animal. Some animals take more clues than others to find.
