SCUM
Way too hard for noobs
I played some SCUM maybe 18 months ago, only SP PvE, which is my thing. I loved it until I got into big city and getting hard earned loot back from beeper-rich areas was just impossible. I thought I would give it a try again, as maybe it was a bit more manageable now... Well HOLY COW!!!!! I enjoy challenging survival games. But this is just... it is SO hard as to be utterly un-enjoyable. You just cant get a foothold. I've probably put in about 10 hours this last time, but I'm done now. I decided not to put a negative review up on Store page because I don't really think that helps. But maybe a post here could relay my disappointment to Devs.

I can agree with you that it would be extremely difficult in SP starting out. Have you tried different servers? Maybe finding other people to run with?

How will that make the game play different?

I have been playing SP for 5 years and the game has changed many times. I personally don't play with the horde system while in SP but I do go on a few servers now and then just to keep the game interesting. I have found settings that works very well for my type of gameplay style. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that the current "framework" for the puppets is that the puppets will always spawn in the direction you are facing.

So if you run around looking side to side like some paranoid person then a puppet might surprise you, but if you run with a steady head, the puppet will always spawn within visible sight.

The most difficult/challenging part of the game is when you begin a fresh character. You are forced to craft a bow and arrows, without a doubt. There is no way of avoiding this even if this is a loot/shoot game, you will NEVER be lucky to find a gun + ammo + mag. NEVER.

Sometimes I even disable the mechs, their range and detection is almost unreal but seeing they are such advanced mechs, it is kind of expected for them to shoot accurate almost 100% of the time.

You mean playing with other players instead of solo? I think that should be easy to figure out.

after 2-3 weeks nothing is to hard not to fix for you. Ok Goldlocks is still very hard imo.

Like old Megaman2 on Nintendo, you have to practice same thing over like 30 times to get next level.

keep head up

personally in 2 minds over what you have said. did you adjust your SP setting for puppets?

1st (based on pre 0.95) game on official setting is too easy, too much loot, too easy to find equipment, no struggling with food and water, only challange was when they introduced infections and only due to limited spawn areas for antibiotics, as for the big city it really only had a few beepers and only around a couple areas.

2nd- (post 0.95) can agree with ya, as a new player having puppets spawning around you and pre-aggro on you as they spawn plus added to that every 3rd or 4th puppet calling a horde, it will make game too hard to get into or enjoy.

but this is just based on my starting experiences from a few years ago and comparing to what i see now

LOL. And the odds of getting something besides a c4 injury are astronomical!!

Like collector said , try a bow and arrows instead, and build an improvised quiver to the arrows. I was struggling at first because I was running around with a wooden spear lol, but once you get that bow you can explore and learn more comfortably.

There is a bigger chance of stepping on a landmine in the game while playing SP than you getting a gun with ammo. 😬😂 Just imagine when they bring gun jams back while having unbalanced horde system... ever since they removed this, the game has been quite easier.

Hello OP :),

Thank you for your feedback. SCUM can indeed be very challenging and the thing I can most recommend is familiarizing yourself with the server settings, as these will allow you to customize your game the way you want it. Suicide puppets, for example, could be deactivated here, as could mechs.

So there are some options that you can adapt to your needs to make the game more pleasant and interesting for you. It's best to try it once and dare to change a few things that you don't like or that you would simply like to make easier. :)

To access Server Settings you can press ESC while playing and then select Server Settings.

server settings would be used more if they had more information on what they are and how they work, i look at the settings and i`m like does google translate this into english (spell checker is telling me english is spelt wrong, it is spelt correctly) i don`t bother changing the settings mainly because i don`t understand how they work together, just altering one and see what happens does do much, a guide that explains everything would be useful, why do the devs not understand this, playing scum has gone from being fun to being tortured, i spend more time reading the posts in the forum than i spend playing this game, and i enjoy being in the forum more than i enjoy playing scum.

Hello!
We do realize that SCUM can sometimes be hard on new players, and that's why we went in the direction of making in-game helpers like Survival Tips and Codex, and we hope we can do more in that area in the future.

That being said, SP is highly customizable and so are private MP servers, we really wanted for everyone to be able to find their piece of fun, from hardcore PvP players to players who just want to build a base, a garden, and watch their vegetables grow :)

If there is anything specific that troubles you, you can always ask, our communities both here and on our official Discord will surely help, and as you can see, we devs also like to pitch in!

Hi, below 500 hours you don't know SCUM.
This is not a easy game. It's deep and amazing. You could play for 3k hours and still learning it.

I've been a newbie too, and I remember how hard was learning it.
So I wrote this idea.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/513710/discussions/7/4041482298418008733/

We need a Basic preset (a soft version of the game) that help newcomers to learn it.

A gentle introduction to the game that take you by hand and let you enjoy the game until (and if!) you want to have more. Then you can switch the Standard preset where you can enjoy a bitter verison of it.

Feel free to add a comment if you like.

Thank you so much to everyone who offered advice and support. 10/10 to community and thank you Frle and Deathwhisper. I will definitely play with settings. I must confess I have been fooling about with #spawn commands and #teleport to my corpse, which has made life a bit easier - but I prefer to not use them.
