SCUM

How is the single player experience?
Won't be playing mp as I'm interested in sp only. I enjoy the genre (Infected, Night of the Dead, Mist, 7DtD, etc). Base building, crafting, exploring are what interests me most.

Will the sp experience scratch that itch? Or is the game really meant for mmo and sp is more of a 2nd thought?

Umm, Think of it as a mix of Green Hell and Mist. It doesn't have a PVE end game yet, so most of your fun will be subjective. {Example} I enjoy the survival, slice of life aspects. So most of my single player time is spent hunting, gathering food, looking for better clothes and fishing. lol

I would only recommend multiplayer if you're the type of person who get's lonely easily. Because the Island is well an Island and apart from the puppets and traders you'll very rarely see anything of life. Multiplayer you can at least pass the time with global chat.

It's a fun game but currently you have to make your own fun in single player at least.

What he said.
I never have and never will play multiplayer. The SP experience is essentially you being alone in a MP game. There is nothing at all geared towards the SP-er. If you are EXTREMELY patient, have an active imagination, don't mind grinding a bit, and tweak the settings to suit your gameplay, there's fun to be had. But don't go expecting anything other than the Base building, crafting and exploring you mentioned.

Scum solo may be nice to explore and learn game, but it may be boring after cuple of hours becuse of lack of threat or lonelyness

theres servers with only 2-10 players and thats pretty solo aswell. Sometimes you may run in to other players within tranders but more likely not.
For best balance as solo i would go for a server with 10-20 playes. You need the parnoid nerv back of head to really play the game SCUM imo.

Their is no end game no hordes or anything that attacks your base, its a Looter/shooter and after a while you will just be a horder of stuff, the only thing to do is collect and Bunker runs that are hard, but once again when you get home you will just fill your boxes, rinise and repeat, I enjoy the game and do the above, but I also play games with some kind of ending or something to do, like 7day, No one Survived etc, but really the only end game thing is to raid bases, growing a farm by a lake is awesome btw

I greatly enjoyed the grind and fitting out of my players. As soon as I get totally geared and there is no more challenge, I reroll a new character and go at it again. I enjoy the looting and puppets and you can tweak the puppets to me a total nightmare or just an occasional nuisance. I like a little of both and I leave the sentrys active with just .10 damage. When I want to really do something or go for achievements, I play Icarus. Needless to say, I enjoy playing solo and not having to worry about having my base destroyed by toxic weirdos or getting robbed. I live near Chicago so I get enough of that IRL. It's a great game for solo play and I never get lonely.

Others have already covered the SP elements

There are official MP servers which use 'vanilla' settings, but invariably, depending which official server you pick, you may encounter those who use applications to enhance their enjoyment because they lack the skills to play legitimately anyway

There are private MP servers out there that are set up as 'solo', 'duo' or 'trio

usually you can find them advertising in the Steam forums in the sevrer section. Generally you'll find on these servers no large roving gangs of pre-established.. well gangs.. that have all the lewtz

Additionally, there are servers that have 'bot shops' and 'start packs' but usually these servers are somewhat... 'fast paced'... and you may not be left alone for too long...

I would suggest, give the SP a go, learn the basics and then find a 'solo/duo/trio' server.. maybe even find some players to play with in the looking for group steam forum... of just plunge into a server and ask in global.... if you do the latter, you'll likely find out if its a toxic server if someone lures you to an ambush under the guise of 'teaming up'... so find another server ;P
