[Question] [New Player] Stash Advice - How Does One "Safely" Store Items?
Hey there, new player here with a general question.

How do you safely store items? I'm not particularly worried about keeping it safe from other players so much as I am wanting to ensure it doesn't de-spawn. My initial impulse was to pick a random house that I'm reasonable sure I could identify later and fill the cabinets with loot from the area, it's what I do in games similar.

Is this fine to do? Or will items despawn? How long do I have before the contents of the container refreshes with default settings, and what can I do to make sure that my items don't get deleted? Alternatively, what is the most cost effective container I can just build on the outskirts of town and recognize as my own to return to later?

I'm at the point where I have too many things that I really don't want to part with yet cannot afford to continue carrying around as I lack the space.

Suggestion .. DO Not use existing storage in pre-build house .. it will DE-Spawn ...
You can use a house, but make your Own storage create ..
Only thing is you might have puppets spawning in the house at a later date and the new Horde system could cause you trouble when coming back to it.

Are you playing SP or MP ?? .. If SP, build a small dwelling somewhere just outside of a town ... If Mp _ Good Luck .... There is alot to learn and it is completely different than other - same type of games. And I'm still learning.

You haven't been able to store in prefab furniture since v0.1
at the most you can store food in the fridge. if you're playing MP, build a storage crate and bury away from your base because if a player raids your base or prefab structure, they can pick your crate locks and steal your beans and bullets

Singleplayer, at least until I figure out enough of the game to be confident on a multiplayer server. I've heard rather notorious things about the community and would prefer to have the basics down before I have to deal with that.

Good to know about the storage crate. It took me awhile but I eventually figured it out. Just sort of have one sitting outside the main area that I'm looting in a spot where I can recognize it easily. Was lucky enough to find a compass so I should be able to find it again.

Really really wish we could zoom in and draw on the map. This game has fully voice acted sh*tting sound effects, particle effects, and an animation, but the map can't be interacted with. Little flabbergasted there.

GOOD Move on Playing SP for now and that is all I Play .. MP can get rough not because of the Game, BUT the players that _ Will Steal you blind.
There are some good server out there, but to be honest I haven't found and perfectly happy playing by myself .. might get boring at times, but that fine. Enjoy and Have Fun :steamhappy:
Edit .. yes about Map .. that one we all wish we could interact with it.

Check your crafting page, base building tab, under storage.
There are 3 chests, 2 cabinets, and 2 wood storage containers for logs or whatever.
Check the crafting requirements for the chests, and choose which to build based on access to the resources needed to craft. (Previously you needed advanced engineering for the metal chest, now engineering just lowers the crafting requirements)

You can build tools from basic rubbish like stones and sticks, so you don't "need" to carry them every where.

Nails, I think is the only thing you need to find specifically, and you can now craft those from scrap metal at a workstation/drill press.
Scrap metal you find in trash and usually 2 pieces in cars.

Chests can be built anywhere, whereas cabinets need to be built in a flag zone.
When you build your chest, store what you like, and if on multiplayer, bury it with a shovel.
Finally, you can place a blueprint, to find your chest easier when you return.
The flag blue print can be seen from much further away than any other blue print, but can't place those everywhere.

Get supplies to build a crate and bury it with your stuff and mark or remember where it's at. If you don't check in once in a while it will despawn.

If you find a disabled vehicle (WW, Laika, Rager) boat, or wheelbarrow: use it for storage. I believe you have 10 game days (default settings) before it despawns.
