In principle it is possible to build your home "anywhere", but the extent to which this is successful can vary. (For example, this is not recommended in an old bunker).
Making a base from one of the prefabs is possible in many places. It is important here to secure the base accordingly by placing locks and window barricades that make it difficult to break into the building.
As already described by MeanStreak, you can also place a flag in some places (in single player almost everywhere since the limits are deactivated), so in addition to a home you also have a land claim, which you can later expand the area if necessary.
What's the idea?
Do we have to barricade every window and place locks in every door the building has to prevent zombies squeezing in somehow or magically spawn inside to have a sleep?
Or is this removed on purpose, so you can't use houses as a base, or is it a bug?
Whatever it is, it should be as it used to be.
It's a bug at the moment. The devs are aware.
I only place one window barricade in SP to keep them from spawning back inside. Haven't played MP for awhile now, so don't know if it is the same there.
Edit: i mainly playing single.
