Base building question

So safe to say I'm "new" to the game. I tried it a long time ago but never got far, picked it up again very recently and have been playing it heavily. But here's my question:

Step 1: Place a flag
Step 2: Start placing foundations with giant gaps underneath allowing someone the ability to crawl underneath them. Can't place anything to block them either as walls will only snap above them. Place them low enough in the ground and can't snap other foundations to them.

How are you supposed to stop people from going underneath them? There HAS to be something I'm missing for base building. I've got my engineering as high as I could (advanced) to start but all I have is twig foundations which is a platform on 4 poles. Is this really my only option? And wouldn't it make sense to place the foundation first so that you can put the flag on it and have the flag INSIDE your base? As it sits now, you can't do anything to really protect the flag. I'm sorry but I'm really confused here..

Consider building a perimeter wall that's not part of your hut. Keep your flag on the ground. Otherwise it gets destroyed with the floor along with all of its benefits.

how do I manage that? I can't build the foundations low enough to the ground and walls won't work without the foundation, unless there's a setting I missed somehow.

You build a Wall from the like fort wall not the house wall they are more free move-able, you can edge them right up to your foundations

It's a bit hidden in the build-menue, but there's a wall that you can build independend from a foundation.
I has also a variable length, from just 1 pillar to a few meters.
Forgot it's name, but its symbol in the menue looks like a post or pole.

Btw.: I recommend trying all this stuff out in SP, where you can go to "god-mode" and build for free, just to see how things are working (or rather not working, as basebuilding is....let's say: challenging :) )

Okay, now i'm certain I'm doing something wrong, because house stuff is all I have. Here's some screenshots. Don't mind the red scores, I mixed a toxic mushroom into my stew and am still getting over the effects.

I did scroll down and found "basic fortifications" but that doesn't seem to work, I get a "can't build" or "unable to reach" when I try to build them so I don't know how to work them yet.

Yeah, i'm running my own server on g-portal so my friend and I can play together and control the world. I can use #setgodmode true on it. :)

Edit: I think I found the wall you were talking about. It's in the bottom section listed as "Wooden Wall". I can place it anywhere and it stretches.

There's barbed wire you can build and place along your foundations
besides the walls
