Either you find the part you need in a garage or you loot it from some wreck.
I think Tomislav asked on his twitter (sorry, "X") in one of his posts if people preferred being able to strip a car entirely or wanted it simpler. People should hit up his post or maybe make an open post in the 'suggestions' sub.
Don't get me started on the issues with base building and material requirements. To claim this game is for survival and yet it takes days of making loot runs back and forth to the different poi's for brick, concrete, and gravel yet some jerk can go loot one poi and come out with a couple tnt...more than enough to blow into a metal structure. It's like...why add elements of Rust into Scum when this isn't supposed to be Rust? We didn't need rocket launchers in this game, and now there's rumors of sentry guns for base protection and AA coming to combat the planes in the future? I mean come on....you take all the elements of that into account with this game of starving, never finding anything when looting on vanilla, trying to get a car working before, etc etc. and I might as well go back to playing rust if it's going to get like that ya know? the direction this game is taking comes off absurdly to what it originally was supposed to be.
++++++++
You cannot do this within the game mechanics you can only make it so that the car will have an engine. It may still require a battery, alternator etc etc.
The wally bot system can but that is a third party and not cheap!
I guess its end game content, you will need to work for it.
Its just speculation but this is how its future looks to me.
Mostly one will have to buy the missing or replacement parts and get involved with the mission system.
Seasoned players could collect parts and store them at their base to complete or repair their car. If lucky you find a vehicle to salavage parts from. Also it would be wise to focus on one or two vehicles and only bring those parts back unless you want to play as a car mechanic which would make a good job given the circumstances.
So the first step is working toward aquiring or completing a vehicle
then you have to maintain it and get spare parts to keep it running
finally you upgrade it to your liking with storage space, armor or weapon mounts.
To complement this it could be possible to find engine parts and repair the wrecks or build a vehicle from the ground up and even repair "destroyed" vehicles most of the time, so your vehicle can stay with you unless another player takes it. Maybe with enough skill you could also build some parts or refurbish them for different vehicles.
To me it seems that vehicles are intended to be realistic and detailed, they are not only for getting you from a to b fast, they will have their own gameplay so you will actually feel proud when driving one down the road. And yeah it wont be the american way of life where you drive everywhere, walking will be part of the game.
Vehicles seem to be tiered, given their use and complexity. Some are easy to aquire and some are rare and prestigeous.
- Rafts you can just build it.
- Bycycles are simple dont need so many parts and you can craft some of them easily.
- Bikes dont have much storage but need less parts gets you around fast.
- Cars need many parts but are of great use.
- Trucks need many rarer and more expensive parts but offer more storage, upgrades and durability.
- Planes most complex top tier vehicle.
- Utility Vehicles (only aquired in bunkers and dangerous zones) maybe some Military Trucks or TEC1 APCs durable enough to survive combat encounters but you get parts only in protected bunkers.
To my impression the whole modular system will feel pretty good once it is complete and balanced with all other features in the game, we just have to wait.
The ability to use items in your hand without having to enter the inventory would have been better.
+1 Speaking of Tetris Minigame.. Ever had a full back pack trying to fit VSS you just found.. I usethe "lets play tetris here cause i need everything" saying a lot.
I guess it would be optional. Can still search for vehicles with working engine or buy them.
But it would be an option to repair wrecks without working engines or "destroyed" vehicles if you crash it into a tree. (The vehicles that spawn without engine now would of course spawn with broken engines instead)
Pretty sure it wont go down to attaching specialized screws, likely like other mechanics in the game you will just find generalized packs of vehicle engine parts and need a certain number and of course an engine block to repair.
