Don't eat shrooms unless you know which ones are safe, as said, sardine factory is good. search kitchen of every house in the start when finding a village and look in yards for small crops like mellons potatoes etc. Corn is in big fields in crops but tedious to search eventually you'll get one or two.
Craft a bow and some arrows and you might get lucky and come across a chicken or goat or boar. If seeing bear or wolf I'd try to stay away. If you hit an animal once, you can track it after it runs using the focus button (I think right mouse by default) it shows occasional foot prints (check youtube on a tutorial about hunting) You will find it again to fire another arrow or find it already dead.
South of the map you can search olive bushes and cactus plants as well as aloe plants. if a prompt comes up "this tastes funny" dont eat more of it until food repulsion debuf goes away in the metabolism tab, once its "healed" you can eat more.
In addition to that, some houses have gardens included so search those as well, and you an stumble upon the corn or potato field as well.
Potatoes are the best vegetable to eat, IMO. A couple of them will give you a lot more energy than most of the others. Locate the many potato fields around the map, memorize them.
Fruit trees- apples, pears, cherries, date palms, and olives in the coastal areas.
Supply drops often contain a food locker, with 3 MRE's, bread, candy, and soda.
Best place for canned food, is the storage closets in Tech1 bunkers. I usually come out of those places with 2-4 cans of stuff, plus MRE's
If #1, set camp for a day or two until you gather enough food, that would be veggies from small gardens or fields or meat from animals you kill, there are bears and wolves int he woods. Do not waste time looting kitchens and houses because in SP there is nothing to loot in them. Do not move on until you have enough food, you can log out and back in game to respawn crops of vegetables.
If #2, find an area with big corn fields and stock up your base which should be nearby. Pick up all the corn, go back to base unload in a crate then quit the game and restart it, the corn will be back to pick up again. If you are near a forest go kill some animals too. A water source would be good to have but if you do not let your food/water levels go below 80% one piece of corn will replenish both.
I been surviving pretty well atm but i am around 50% hunger with no food so thats a bit concerning i have some improvise quilvers, crossbow, and a backpack but since i didnt know this game had base building im not sure if i want to make a base in the snow or forest.
First off, don't worry about being at 50% energy. You'll get the obnoxious 'OMG, i'm starving!' messages, but in reality, you aren't going to start losing health until you get below 0% for a while. And it takes a while for that to happen, you aren't going to instantly start dying when you get to 0%. I don't eat anything until my chars get below 30%, and often not till around 10%. That'll keep you healthy just fine, but will also allow you to lose weight and gain Dexterity stat. If i eat so much that i get up over 50%, i think 'oh crap, gonna get fat again!', lol. If you're all the time eating everything you can find just to stay up at 100% energy, you doing it very wrong.
Veggies, fruits and candy bars and what not I usually consume when found and if not needed at the time leave it in my inventory and use it next.
