Renting server worth it
I was thinking of renting a server since it's been a struggle for me to find a server I actually enjoy playing on. I'm wondering if it's even worth it though because it feels like the population of Scum is thinning. The LFG and Server advertisement pages on here have been dead lately and even seeing servers close down. Would it even be worth it?

Obviously this is more of an opinion type question but I'm looking to hear some of everyone's feedback to help me decide if I want to shell out the time and money for one. Thoughts?

I'd wait till it's finally released at 1.0 stage. especially once it can be modded

I hear ya. I'm not big into mods or really altering the game too much. That's why I've been struggling to find a server I enjoy. People tend to change too much and/or make the game too easy making the survival aspect of the game irrelevant. I'm just concerned with the population of the game because it seems to me that less and less people are playing it. So don't wanna rent a server if the community is fizzling out.

There are too many servers out there for the current population playing imo. That is why the game seems so dead.
Most players tend to log onto a server only to see what is new and then disappear again till the next update.
The Devs imo hurt their own game when they pulled all the vehicles out like they did. Hopefully as more return so will the players.
I would wait I would keep looking and learn more of the game first.

No harm in give it a try. 10 bucks monthly for 10 slots on GPortal, cancel within that month or keep it running. 30 days to form your opinion.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. PerfectPing is only $15 for 10 slots. So was thinking of just trying it out. I'll have to watch some videos on it because I've never hosted my own server before so I'm not exactly sure how to do all the admin stuff or how to recognize cheaters/hackers etc. Can't imagine it's too difficult, I just don't know anything about all that stuff.

Never did I before, just jumped into it. ;) And honestly, it's plain easy and mostly self explanatory.
I'd recommend gportal, simply to save 5 more bucks and you can cancel anytime. Just loosing 10 bucks in case you decide it's not for you.
The interface is very noob-friendly, support works quick and well and never had any issues with crashes or that kind of stuff. :)

A lot easier than I thought it would be actually. We also use gportal and have had no issues.
Before I became and admin on our server we had used Nitrado and I don't recommend them. We had a server saving issue that the owner was trying to fiqure out and even a full wipe did not help, Nitrado provided no feedback at all to him.

Our group is on gportal as well. Had a little bit of settling to do when we first started... first server had too many clients on it and performance dropped... they moved us to another server and it's been pretty decent since. Just one note of caution: do not save your server settings when you have 'partial wipe' selected. Trust me :)

I appreciate the info! I'll definitely look into gportal too.

appreciate the info! I've heard bad things about nitrado so won't be using them for sure.

Could you elaborate more on this so I know what not to do? I know the server settings is stuff like how whether there are mechs or not, how many zombies, how hard they hit and stuff. But what's a partial wipe as opposed to a full wipe? And why not save settings?
Andi Feb 28, 2023 @ 11:01am
Partial wipe is an on/off setting and would make it so that your server's being wiped with the next restart, except for player stats, hence partial!
A full wipe would also wipe all player data.
Means everything's gone in terms of basebuilding, storage etc.
This can be helpful if the server becomes overloaded with abandoned bases for instance or other issues regarding stability and performance.
But no worries, as I said, it's an on/off wich you would only activate on purpose. Just leave it off and all good. ;)
Save settings with partial wipe (accidentally) being activated would result in a wipe on every restart. Think that's what happened there. ;D

If I remember when I was renting, a partial will keep the player stats while a full wipe well...

Thanks for explaining! Servers I play on typically have daily our set hours the server restarts. Is this a partial reset? If so I'd probably end up doing that as well as it gets rid of clutter and stuff to help keep the server fresh to my understanding.

I reset my servers two times a day (automated), mainly to re-new loot and resources like trees for building. Restart is nothing like a wipe or partial reset. It's basically the same as you'd log off and back in in singleplayer. Nothing changes, except loot and resources respawn. :) Also might help with performance, don't know, but that's not a problem on a 10 slot server anyway. Might be more important to hi-pop, max slot servers.

Okay cool thank you!

Btw is there any place I can go that will explain each of the setting options for the server settings? I was looking them over and some of them are kind confusing. I also want to know how to set up certain zones to be pvp and set up the vendors in safe zones to have limited inventory.
