are directx 12 and vulkan worth switching to now?
gtx 1070 with i7 10700k
just wondering if the experimental branches of these apis are stable enough for general gameplay yet and if they offer any increase in performance.

Not for all users but it's worth trying out. DirectX 11 based games only use 2-4 cores for the various mechanics: Physics, AI, draw-calls ... Now with DirectX 12 the load is more evenly distributed across all cores, making multi-core CPUs perform much better. With DirectX 11, there’s only a single queue going to the GPU which leads to uneven distribution of load across various CPU cores, essentially crippling multi-threaded CPUs. With your card, please make sure that whatever games you play on DX12 - do not use any raytracing video options as that will most likely result in FPS spikes and the gameplay will not be smooth as expected. I'd definitely recommend you try it out and see for yourself !

How to close raytracing video options ?

Same question. I thought that Ray tracing option is setting of certain game, our Scum does not have it, therefore Ray tracing is on or off?

I was talking about games in general that support raytracing : " please make sure that WHATEVER games you play on DX12 - do not use any raytracing video options " .

10600k and 1080 here. got half the fps with directx12 and serious lag drops after some time on vulkan.

Just tried DX12 on my potato PC, looks nice. With the same settings I got 15-20 fps more than DX11. From 55-70 in DX11, to 75-85 in DX12

where can find raytracing video options ?

In my case - dx12 downs FPS about 20%, Vulcan does not run at all.
10750
2060
So DX11 is preferable

Just done a test online, DX12 seems not to perform when it's raining. In SP is less evident this. Similar to what happened to me before 0.5. Drop of fps (10-20) and looking around it's not so smooth, like stuttering.

Thanks very much for taking your time to reply and give this very useful info.

I have done a bit of testing and as with max here,

i am also experiencing around 20% fps drop when switching to dx12 and im noticing a lot more stuttering which really bothered me, seeming theres a decrease in fps with higher end hardware but it might be useful to anyone with lower spec pcs (if you dont run into any rain that is) but for now ill choose the regular api.

thanks for everyone else for chipping in, really appreciate all the info :)

GTX1050ti + Ryzen 5 3600

In the rain:
Vulkan: 9-21 fps
DX12: 32-35 fps
DX11: 27-30 fps

I also see cpu utilization up to around 15% with DX12 as opposed to around 5% with DX11.
In my case, DX12 seems to utilize more of my 6 core cpu, and so far seems to run smooth.

Agreed.

I get random crashes using DX11. So, I deal with the minor issues of DX12. By making a large Page File on the OS drive, it got rid of most of the stuttering.

Someone also posted yesterday to go into Windows 10 Gaming settings and to turn off Game Mode. For some people, this gets rid of the random FPS drops to 10. I still need to head into Samobor to try it out.

Any updates?

11900kf rtx3090 32gb win11

I always play Scum on DX12 (Experimental) mode & have been very happy with the results but was recently wondering if there's any reason to try the others & found this thread, here are my current results:

DX11 130
DX12 107
Vulcan 90 w/ stuttering

Thank you for the performance report, many of our players, especially with nvidia cards have reported best performances on the DX options (more so DX12). I would ask you to not reopen up old threads but create new ones either in here or "Technical Support" for performance discussions.
