If there are some similarities (and there are some) those are the classic exceptions that confirm the rule.
So yeah: those are too different to compare.
Never played Rust, but it was released on December 11, 2013. 8 years ago. SCUM is a little over 3 years old, in EA, not released yet. Considering Rust is an 8 year old game which has had tons of time to be fully patched, updated and polished, i would hope it was 'better made' at this point. At least from the standpoint of all game components and features being implemented and more or less bug free by this time.
But aside from that, i'm betting SCUM is going to be the 'better made' game, by the time it's done.
A big world, with no rules if you will. I like to compare that to Fallout 4 as I would have liked. With all the possibilities and ideas that are here and will continue to be found. I like SCUM very much and it has flattered itself to the top very quickly in my favorites and is consistently there. :D
There are Rust servers with hundreds of players and you will definitely die in the first 5 to 15 minutes on your first run. Even on low population servers it will be harsh. I was killed on a servers where only 6 players were online..
SCUM however, even on high populated servers (around 80 slots), you might not meet a single player for hours, except if you go where the juicy loot is. You will have more time to learn the game mechanics, and if you really want to take your time you still have the option to play in single player mode. (offline)
SCUM has a complex metabolism to deal with while in Rust you just need food/water and you are fine. Rust is more PvP oriented, not survival.
You can easily live a nomadic life in SCUM, in Rust, without a base to craft various things on a workbench, unlock blueprints, forge etc.. you won't get anywhere except if you are highly experienced with the game. And your base won't stay long even on low population servers.
Rust will often teach you how it feels to spend hours building a base and gathering good loot to simply loose everything overnight while you are offline. Rust is simply much harder to deal with because it keeps on beating you to the ground. With SCUM you can enjoy the view and fish without constantly worrying about a naked player breaking your skull with a rock from behind.
There is not answer to which one is better, you play them completely differently and seek different game mechanics.
I also like that the devs are active on steam and give feedback. This guys are really great and the ideas they are coming up with shows that they are really into their game. Something I miss with a lot of the big companies nowadays. Sometimes its all the little details and love put into it that makes a game special.
IMO SCUM is better especially if you are solo player - but these are completely different types of game
the biggest problem with RUST is the fact that servers die off very quickly because of the wipe cycles (its like you have maximum amount of players early in the wipe - this continues for like 3/4 days then medium pop and later server is basically empty for the rest of the wipe and cycle repeats)
- If you're a psychopath and like to drink blood you'll play Rust
Different games? Too different to compare? lol check this out:
- Both have basebuilding (one has more sophisticated)
- Both have raiding
- Both have weapons and crafting weapons (one has more sophisticated crafting)
- Both have workbenches to craft stuff
- Both have PvP
- Both have motorboats (Dayz doesnt have motorboats - correct me if Im wrong - so no, not all games have motorboats)
- Both have hunting and harvesting animals
- Both have eating and need for food
- Both have harvesting resources to build
- Swords in both? CHECK!
- Both have big maps (one has map way too big)
- Both have UI in terms of crafting - how do both compare in terms of ease of use and clarity? Not possible to compare? Just lol, of course its possible
- Both have beds where you spawn at when you die
- One has advanced metabolism - THE ONLY CRUCIAL THING THAT DIFFERS IN THESE GAMES
- Heck both even have mushrooms to find and eat !!
- Both have cooking steak!
- Both have chainsaw? CHECK!
- Both have Clan systems
- Both have ingame VOIP (EFT for example does not have VOIP - so no, not all games have VOIP)
- Both have different bows! Crossbow, normal bow, compound bow! WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT! So technically, even shooting these bows is comparable!
- Both had reviving downed teammates - but I believe (not sure) it was somewhat nerfed in Scum, so not sure if its still in the game
- Both have POI's wtih loot (bunker vs oilrig/submarine)
- Once Scum gets AI - both will have AI enemies (rust has Scientists)
- Once Scum gets a safe/trader zone - guess what? BOTH WILL HAVE TRADER/SAFE ZONES - and whats more - will Scum also have mini games in those safe zones - like the wheel or gambling in Rust? WOW still two very different games? lol
So it is possible to compare both games in all similarities, apart from the advanced metab system. Also AI Sentries, and Zombies (which were originaly in Rust from what I gather).
But you know what is also different? Rust has ADVANCED base defensive towers - so that is something that Scum doesnt have. So I guess its 1:1 in terms of crucial things both games miss in comparison to each other.
ALSO IMPORTANT: Which game can have the most concurrent players on simultaneously on one server, and not have lag problems? Scum 64 - Rust? Im not sure, but I wouldnt be surprised if its more than 64 players on one server without lag.
The only reason for saying two different games, impossible to compare and rate is:
Diplomacy. You just dont want to be hated on these forum by other fellow Scum players for your opinion.
So it would be possible to rate on the similarities - of how complex, robust, or annoying each section of the games are in comparison (Survival aspect, PvP aspect, Base buidling, Weapons, Crafting, Medical, Spawning, Trader Zones.....)
To be clear, I am not saying which game is better here, but I am saying IT IS POSSIBLE WITH EASE TO COMPARE BOTH GAMES TO EACH OTHER, in similar areas, which there are a lot (not "some" as you say). What is more, there are many more similarities than there are differences between the two games.
Example: How would you compare base buidling in both games? You say: its not possible. How the F is it not possible? You build a base in both games - OF COURSE ITS POSSIBLE! lol
PS. Oh and did you see that modular base buidling that was shown as WIP in Scum? Looks like it will even have more things in common in future - not judging - just saying.
Rust has huge 700 players server, you can watch youtube videos online. I have no idea what kind of wizardry they did with their netcode, but you can easily find and play on 400 pop servers with no issue.
Wow... 700, 400 what brilliant player numbers. Thats where Scum devs should focus... to have at least 200 concurrent players lag free on map at the same time. Not some other aestethics, skins or other things that will still make the gianormours map empty...
Or is it also not possible to compare player numbers on servers either? lol
official ones host max of 200 afaik - community servers do not count because its the players/organization's that host them
So you mean they are just like the player rented servers in Scum?
Let me remind you, most of the top 10 servers in Scum are player hosted.
