SCUM

Impossible to level up skills
Let's take the skill "Stealth" as an example.

Upgrade costs:
0 > Basic 10.000
Basic > Medium 100.000
Medium > Advanced 1.000.000
Advanced > Advanced+ 10.000.000

Total: 11.110.000 Points
When crouchwalking the player gets approx 1 Point per second.
....calculus.....math.....

Ah only ~3100 hours of crouching straight.

12400 Kilometres.

Thats crossing the SCUM Map over 1000 times.(1033) In Crouch mode.

Well. Why is there even a skilling system?

First you find a big double bush. Cut it down and with all the long sticks build brush palisades to make a corner section where the bush was. Wait 24 hours for the bush to grow back. Then when you have to go to the toilet, go make a hot cupa tea or coffee, find out there’s no milk so you have to go to the dairy to get milk to make your cupa, go get or make something to eat or go to the fridge for a cold one. Stand in the dunce corner crouch press shift+w for auto walk.
You gain endurance, stealth and camouflage. You don’t gain much but why stand ideal gaining nothing while you get that beer.

If you don't dump all your points into stealth then you won't have any stealth. This needs to be fixed.

This (stealth) might be slight overkill, but generally all of the skills should be like this. It SHOULD be difficult to get max level with a skill. Otherwise everyone is going to play a few hundred hours and be max level at everything which is boring. Players should need to choose their specialties if they want to be an expert at something. The harder it is to get the better the reward should be. So if they make it easy to get max skill then the skill bonus will be small and useless. I rather have it be difficult to attain with the reward being a substantial bonus of some sort.

Currently getting your skill up to medium is pretty easy and doesn't take that long. Medium being the average skill level for something. Its good enough for most players for most tasks. Expert is only for the hardcore guys that will put thousands of hours into the game in order to become an expert in their chosen field.

They've been playing with skill gain for awhile now. I'm sure we can expect skills to get balanced further as time goes on. Boxing for example used to be very difficult to skill up. Not sure about the current patch for that though.

Problem with extra long training times for afk friendly skills . Servers will be full of macro users and afk'ers and no-one will be playing.

Join server with 40 folk ,20 are afk/macro training ; top gaming.

building up skills takes far too long, and even a maxed out skill doesn`t improve gameplay, but that just my opinion, i can see what there trying to do, but gameplay is more important than wasting hours developing skills, espically if a wipe is needed or for whatever reason i redo the character, honestly many players have no interest in becoming hardcore gamers, and grinding away just to unlock something you want or need feels like a punishment, this used to be a great game, but now when they add something to it, it loses something and i fear the game will keep adding things until it reaches a point where people won`t play anymore, while complaining about how boring the game has gotten.

Stealth is not a great example of how the skill system leveling works. Stealth is very much a passive skill that increases slowly over time. Agreed this one takes a long time to level up. Most of the rest level up in larger increments as you use them. Take camouflage for example. When you initially crouch in any sort of underbrush you get an initial exp boost of around 150 at the basic level. Each second after that you stay in the bush you get 1 per second. stand up and shuffle over slightly then crouch, you get the initial 150 xp again. As you level up and the total number of points you need increases, you get more points from the initial crouch.

Once you learn what skills are harder to level up, you will start putting some points there when you create your character

Now let's do the math on that if you go from just the 1 point a second crouching in a bush, 60s in a minute 60 minutes in an hour so 60*60=3600 and to get to advanced it would take us 1000000 points so 1000000/3600=278 rounded off from 278.777,278/24=11.58 so about 12 days. That grind is ridiculous, and that's if you go 12 straight days of playing which is kind of silly for any game.

The skill system is absolutely ment for the long term duration. Devs have never misrepresented this or been shy about the grind either.

I could've swore I seen stats indicating the usage was even further than what your math showed too.

Does anyone know if the devs already nerfed this a bit at some point?

Perhaps when there is more skills & caveats it would be more enjoyable & understandable to others.

That kind of misses the point I was trying to make. Every 5 seconds I can move and squat back into the same bush and gain 150/200/225 depending on the level. That will speed up your time by at least a factor of 30
