Distracting Mechs
I have a few questions about mechs. Their lethality makes it hard to test things with them.

Yesterday in the factory, I noticed they seem to stop for periods of time, then start moving again. Is this a new feature or a bug?

Also, I studied their path and waited to escape (they were back to moving at this point)
One went past me as should have continued to walk with its back to my position for about another 10 seconds or so at least. I sprinted down the metal staircase but it turned and said its warning line. Started to run back up to cover but didn't make it.

So.. Can they hear your footsteps now if sprinting and are close enough? In the past I don't recall them turning like that, they stuck to their pathing unless visually spotting you.

Finally. Can you distract them with flares and will they look at the flare until it burns out? I havent found any flares in a while to test this. Generally I just stay away from areas with mechs but I heard vehicle repair kits a common at the factory. I didn't find one but died on the way out..

I think the mechs could always hear you sprinting if close enough and yeah, they'll turn on you. Jogging is usually safe. I haven't tried flares. It seems like smoke grenades have worked for me some times.

I have heard that fireworks distract them but haven't yet tested this.

they could always hear you ,, but from my experience i believe they can hear better for months now,, tried flares about 5 times with no luck.

if you run they will hear you. Mechs get "stuck" not move, thats a bug. And cant destract, that im aware of, unless you have a squad member do it with a gun

Fireworks do not distract Mechs, or puppets. Sprinting will bring a mech to you. The more weight your character is carrying, the more sound you make which will pull mech's and puppets. They have a shared "hearing" setting.

The main problem is what acexperts said. They are very buggy and stop in random spots on their route, usually very inconvenient spots. When I try and pull one for a squadmate it usually looks at me for a second, "target engaged", shoots once, then looks the opposite way of me and it won't move. No matter how many times I shoot it or get seen, it won't move or stay looking at me. It's been like this for around a week now. Before that it would always work fine unless close to server restart

I often get close to them and throw a large rock to distract them. Sprinting is a no-no.

wow really? before whenever I tried throwing something to distract, instead of going off to inspect where it lands, they would become alarmed & follow the trajectory of the rock directly back to me.

i use rocks also to get them to turn around so i can sneak past

I have also tried flares with no luck. I wasn't able to fully test a smoke grenade due to being severely wounded & then practically soft locked by the mech walking up on me at the prison. Also side note, prison is horribly designed relying way too much on luck to get in & out of.

I will say they seem far more cheap when it comes to difficulty compared to when I started playing long ago. There have been times where I literally have like maybe 5 pixels out of a window & it feels like they instantly snap to me to either do their warning action or start shooting.

If we could get info or maybe dig in code & find out how they spot targets that would be appriciated. If thermal then the flares should help distract some, smokes more. If visual then smokes or maybe rocks as part of the sound portion. Also having the fireworks attract both puppets & walkers would be nice & put some actual use to the item.

Whilst not a diversion tactic - if your caught by them you can get out alive. If they spot you, stop when they say "Freeze", and then they ask you to put your hands up. Push F4 (hands up) and they will instruct you to leave the area. Run off and they won't shoot at you. Hope this helps with your tests.

Or you could just decrease their damage to 0.0 in single player server settings file so you can practice without dieing.
