Dedicated Server Files
I have seen a number of posts where the dev's saying that they would be releasing dedicated server files to us. Now it's like who, when, where.. No that was a mistake but really the only mistake would be.. Not releasing dedicated server files I have seen other small teams try this as well.. Player base growth was amazingly fast, an died just as fast. You do really have a great game in the works. By releasing server files and maybe a devkit would grab a giant player base but that's just my opinion.. Thanks

no offence but hundreds of people don't host the game, hosting is not same as renting from company who has already done this for you and simply gives you admin access. Only Gportal host the game and hundreds of people rent from gportal as no server files mean no-one can host their game.

As for refunding I nor most of my group want one, it would be nice to host ourselves though like I said but not bad enough to want refund. Long term I suspect we'll have issues after release.

Eg. Character of a few years gets deleted because server goes down as someone stops paying, or you pay for own from gportal and £500 a year when you could run the same no. of slot server is not worth it when you have work on, other releases you'd like to take a look at etc. In the latter case I saw many many games die and simply fall out of rotation and get forgoten. With own hosting if still highly active keep it running (essentially free if you already have server which you also use for other stuff), when it isn't active we just halt it and archive it for later date when everyone playing together again and progress as usual no loss. There are only 1 or 2 people I know holding off on it and the server issue is only a minor consideration if any in that BUT it would really help for reasons I already listed here and previous post, primarily long term effect.

Devils advocate I totally get why devs may have gone this route as they are small studio and a deal like this probably means a LOT of money which is big deal when they have few other revenue streams aside from sales of single game (they don't have a glut of cashcow franchises to float other projects).

They said a day or two ago that they have no plans of releasing the server files to allow players to host their own server. They said only g-portal can host servers.

sadly they changed their minds it seems, was planning on hosting ourselves too but obviously can't and bad experiences with gportal so never mind. An yeah not a "story" see here for where the info came from https://steamcommunity.com/app/513710/discussions/0/1737715419905724308/

This topic has already been discussed. The only hosting is with Gportal.

Does not mean we have to agree with what they said though. I get that they are legally bound for now, but I am still of opinion that longlevity of a game depends also on the ability of players to host their own servers. Games are never hosted indefinitely. Once economic viability dries up, servers go with it. Will not happen within a few years, but it will happen. For the longterm, if you want to still play this in 10 years for instance, making dedicated server files available to the public, is necessary. This not only applies to this Game, but tons of Multiplayer only titles..

big one for my group is several members already either rent dedicated servers or own them (one member even has a few racks in his house and hosts several games the group plays so he has several grands worth of gear thus renting is silly). Paying a significant price per year when you already have access to something better makes little sense. As for playing on other servers the problem is you can lose everything if the host decided to stop playing and thus renting, server issues are out of your hands troubleshooting wise, performance may be very poor for some of group to those servers and how well are they admin'd for cheating or the like.

What the guy above me says. Also they should remove the online-coop tag from store page. In its current state this is a singleplayer/multiplayer title. see definition below:

Cooperative gameplay (often abbreviated as co-op) is a feature in video games that allows players to work together as teammates, usually against one or more AI opponents. It is distinct from other multiplayer modes, such as competitive multiplayer modes like player versus player or deathmatch. Playing simultaneously allows players to assist one another in many ways: passing weapons or items, healing, providing covering fire in a firefight, and performing cooperative maneuvers such as boosting a teammate up and over obstacles.

In its most simple form, cooperative gameplay modifies the single player mode of a game, allowing additional players, and increasing the difficulty level to compensate for the additional players. More complex examples exist, however, with broader modifications to the story and gameplay. Some co-op games include a new ending when completed in co-op mode. This new ending is unlocked only when players work as a team to complete the game. For instance, Bubble Bobble features an ending that can only be accessed when two players survive co-op mode, as do some console beat 'em up games such as Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Die Hard Arcade.

Co-op gaming can operate either locally—with players sharing input devices or using multiple controllers connected to a single console—or over a network, with co-op players joining an existing game running on a game server via a local area networks or wide area networks. Due to the complexity of video game coding, co-op games rarely allow network players and local players to mix. Exceptions do exist, however, such as Mario Kart Wii or Call of Duty Black Ops, which allows two players from the same console to play with others online.

Co-op gameplay has been gaining popularity in video games in recent years,[1] as controller and networking technology has developed. On PCs and consoles, cooperative games have become increasingly common, and many genres of game—including shooter games, sports games, real-time strategy games, and massively multiplayer online games—include co-op modes.

Co-op gaming can also exist in single player format, where the player works alongside their previous plays in order to complete an objective.

Well it's ok I just requested 3 refunds I'll find something else. It was fun while it lasted.

i can only see this as selling your soul to the devil. we the players are now at the mercy of a single server provider. i hope this will not always be the case. look to arma and how many sales the modding community brought. gamers had the freedom to do and play how they wanted. why should g portal strive for perfection when they have bought the monopoly!
PPlank Sep 3, 2018 @ 1:57pm
Without server code for a game like this, we won't buy.
San Sep 3, 2018 @ 2:28pm
Right there are at least ten of us that I know of are looking into refunds shame really!!

I've always thought that one of the reasons Rust was so successful was server code almost from day one. Same with MineCraft. Good games are better with server code. The "hackers" reason doesn't really wash with me, all multiplayer games get cheats and us server admins deal with them. *shrugs*

The best anti-cheat tool ever put out there is, an awesome crew of admins and stats of course.. Stats don't lie that being said. it's up to the server owners to find the right people to delegate the tasks at hand.

and yet hundreds of people host the game.
