They indeed do "work" together, so we maybe have some rouge sentries on the map.

Was told the same, they work together.
I've Never seen a Mech shoot a Pup.
That won't work unless they changed the hit detection because the puppets used to be immune to friendly fire. I complained about it many months ago though so maybe they changed that. It would be cool if they did change it. The NPCs should be able to accidentally hit each other.
Also the prison where the mechs were gunning down all puppets for whatever reason definitely show they can hit
