Is there a way to split item stacks?

As a shopkeeper playing with friends, I'd like to sell their items for them. However, I cannot find a way to drop any less than my entire stack of gold. So it's just easier to drop the sell o matic for them. There's also similair situations, like being a thief and wanting to divy up the tools among everyone.

under "Items" , it says you CAN split stacks of items. Alt Left Click for mouse and keyboard apparently. I haven't checked if its true.

but you can only do it in multiplayer i think, can't do it in single player.
