In the Pet Shop I saw "is interested in photography" three times and "nudge nudge!" four times over 90 minutes... so the overall rate between those two pieces of highly anecdotal evidence is about the same.
What's quite annoying about this phrase is how much more common three related phrases are:
- "is not interesting" keeps catching the eye when you're looking for "is interested in photography".
- "admires pictures of" - pictures
- "poses nude for" - pictures
So why the heck is "is interested in photography" so dang rare? It doesn't make sense from a gameplay perspective unless it's worth a lot of points. And its current silly appearance rate is just tanking the chances to get this phrase naturally, especially when "nudge nudge!" itself is limited to appearing in hands and neither are the weakness for any character.Fun fact, while (not) playing the game for hours looking for this one phrase, I've seen every other phrase that gives an achievement at least twice, on top of the times I'd already gotten them previously.
I personally think John Shufflebottom and Nigel are probably the two best characters to use and have tried them at the lake, pet shop and ER. With those 3 locations it seemed as if the pet shop had the highest yield of phrases and increased in frequency after an hour. Unfortunately, I was playing late at night and got too sleepy to continue for more than 2 hours (which is insane at any time of day, I know). But in that second hour I had "Your wife is interested in photography" 5 times as opposed to once in the first hour.
My working theory at the moment is to try and slog it out for a full 3 hours on the train to see if that will make it pop. But whether it does or doesn't really won't prove anything except that if you are willing to put in enough time, you are persistent or stupid or some combination of those two qualities.
In reality, it's probably not much different than shuffling a deck of cards and trying to pull 3 aces from the lot, then reshuffling and trying again. In other words, luck of the draw
Say No More is just pure RNG with a crazy low chance, and this really tarnishes what was otherwise a very fun game.
Fortunately it seems the addition of H. P. Lovecraft hasn't added any more "for everyone" phrases. So the chance of getting crazy lucky hasn't decreased even more.
To clarify, yes it's RNG, but that doesn't summarise the problem. You've played for 2 hours so you can't appreciate this yet.
The problem discussed in this topic is that while many of the phrases will probably appear eventually, certain components have an absurdly low appearance rate that makes one or two phrases - chiefly "Say no more" - extremely rare, surely moreso than it was probably intended to be.
I've spent a lot of time on all the different maps by now and if there's a difference between those it's marginal. I haven't noticed any components being more or less common between characters so I'm not sure about this, but I'll give those two a try next time to see if that helps.
I've had strange occurrences like three consecutive "nudge nudge!" appearances with other characters though. I think after spending long enough looking for it we've all got stories like that to tell.
I must stress that there is a distinction though. Yes, there is randomness involved if that's your point.
But the general point of this topic is that "Your wife is interested in photography, nudge nudge!" is very consistently being found by this topic's posters to be many orders of magnitude more rare than all of the other phrases, and that there's unanimous recognition by people who are spending tens of hours trying that two of its components are appearing far less than most other components in the game.
Of course the game contains RNG. But the core of the problem here is the appearance rate of specific components.
At this point, I'm a bit conflicted. I want it to be easier so that I can get it, but I also want the rarity to remain so that IF I get it, it will definitely be an achievement. I think it's also quite possible that the devs will pay attention to this issue and patch it. Look what happened to the 666 achievement. I might be a bit peeved had I spent the time accumulating that many Satan insults only to find that waiting would have netted me a 600 phrase discount.
I guess my recommendation to everyone is to only continue trying to get Say No More if it's enjoyable. If not and you find that your opinion of the game is deteriorating, then stop. Ultimately, this is a good little game and will hopefully continue to evolve and entertain us. Don't let a minging achievement ruin your experience, pillock
I believe it affects others too; I've only been looking out for it in the last few sittings but "is not migratory" seems pretty rare as well, easily far moreso than the likes of "this conversation" and "is silly".
That's why my suggestion in the pinned topic was about components being too rare rather than an achievement being too difficult, because being this rare is probably making the game less fun.
"your wife is interested in photography" does 10 damage, and any other family combination e.g. "your husband is interested in photography" does 8. That difference is so small that I can't believe "is interested in photography" is rare because of some kind of balancing.
Especially not when "this conversation is silly" is an easy 10, and "this conversation" is stupidly common. I can't say for sure it was that way before H. P. was added but it's everywhere now.
Some stats. I've been able to combine "your wife is interested in photography" 12 times, and I have still never seen "is interested in photography" and "nudge nudge!" appear in the same turn. I have also never seen "nudge nudge!" appear while "is interested in photography" is present from having been brought over from a previous turn. I have seen the following:
- "probably murdered" and "this poor man" in the same hand, with "a duck hunter" in the main list.
- "your country" and "is not a part of Europe" in the same hand.
- "is silly" and "and everybody knows that!" in the same hand, with "you" in the main list.
- "your hovercraft" and "is full of eels" in the same hand - three times.
- "still use Windows Vista" and "never watched Star Wars" in the same hand, with both "you" and "and" in the main list.
- "your son" and "your sins" in the same hand, with "died because of" in the main list.
- "your mother" and "a hamster" in the same hand, with "was" in the main list - two times.
In short I've been trying for "Say no more" for so long now that I've seen pretty much every other achievement phrase appear in ways that make them pretty much impossible to miss.In my mind the existence of this achievement (rather, the ludicrous rarity of its two main components) single-handedly make this game far worse.
I just had "your wife is interested in photography" for the 14th time ever (yes I have been keeping count). In the same turn that no (...) appeared, "nudge nudge!" appeared in the teacup of the other character.
