There is:
Ranked play - 10 tiers or so, you play and move down to tier 1. The best of the best are rank 1-20 or something and not part of a tier. So it's competitive in the same was as any other games really.
Casual match making - This is new, but I assume it just finds you a match with people around your skill level as does ranked but it has no impact on ranked.
Custom - You can make your own lobby and invite/wait for players to come in. Game supports 14 player maps so it can get crazy. You can add AI's to these games if you don't get as many players as you like or wanna do a comp-stomp.
