How much should I leave in caches?
The children's caches, where I am supposed to take and leave items, how much should I leave and what kind? Things that aren't in childrens' inventories can be left, like broken ampoules?

I really had no idea myself I just took what I thought was valuable. I mean, I dunno what the punishment for being greedy is.. If any.

Was kinda hard to find them all anyway, couldn't find the one that was suppose to be in the mistress graveyard.

They do punish you in some ways but don't overthink it. Even if they're wierdly smart, they're still kids and prompt to use kids ♥♥♥♥♥♥ logic to screw you over like a Warhammer dorf. Vaguely do it your way or another, maybe you'll see a difference.

What do they do?

Spoiler : They put less items in caches and gives you a quest where they tell you they found the real murderer of your father. They're full of ♥♥♥♥ and they literally frame him up for you to murder him, outright telling you that that's your fault for not following their rules if you bring that topic up afterwards.

This is actually not true. I did a runthrough one in which I OPENED all the lootboxes every day, but only every added items in. The items weren't any different from my other runthroughs (same number of shmowders etc.) and you still get told off for being greedy and lured into that quest. You can't avoid it if you are visiting lootboxes and reading notes.

I didn't want to break the illusion but I'm fairly certain that it makes no difference whatsoever how much you give or take. Unless you want to role-play, you can completely empty all the caches.

True. Also, the number and location of rare caches (with more valuable loot - fingernails, ammo and possible shmowders) are pre-determined and do not change, regardless of how much you take or leave.

I haven't received the quest. I have taken all and left some stuff, randomly, to give back some value. I checked 5 of them, I believe, or 6.

Sorry, just to be clear you don't automatically get the quest no matter what you leave/take. You find a note on day 7 called Mysterious Note. When you touch it, it says: "The ripper's murderer will come to Friday's Yard when pigs fly. You hear that, ripper? We found him!". Then a quest marker will appear at 8pm on day 8 in The Skinners. There's a man waiting there who'll attack you on sight, on his body you'll find 450 coins and the Suspicious Note that, when you touch it, reads, "Found your thief. He'll come to Friday's Yard. Wait for him there. Just hit him first, he's a nutso. 450.". This will trigger a quest marker in Notkin's place, when you go there and talk to a kid they have the option of saying "We took you in, and you were greedy! We told you, there were rules. And you haven't written a single note…You didn't play fair. Yeah." depending on the dialogue tree you pick.
Like I said I have played through taking nothing, just taking & touching all the notes and then replacing them, and adding something in every day. The quest still triggers if you read the right notes.

I usually leave, like, scissors and bugs. maybe stuff that I have too much of. I try to avoid things they wouldn't want if you were trading with them. If I take something like a razor out, I try to add something of comparable value and a little more, as if it were a trading screen. Of course in a crunch you just leave what you can. I remember in the late game they talk about jerboas and other stuff and I actually tried really hard to make sure everything was clear but yeah, like other's said there's no discernible difference that I can tell. Knowing there's no difference, I still can't just take everything and never leave something though. Feels wrong. Much more wrong than sneaking up on someone in the street and lockpicking them from behind for their 15 coins, bottle of twyrine and blood.

What is the point, if you leave the equivalent value in items? Also, some items are very expensive, like cartridges and the showder. What do you do then? Thanks for letting me know, though.
