How valuable are Shmowders?
How valuable are they? I am on day 4 and have 3 Shmowders - one from a hide and seek game, one from a childs stash and one from a girl in exchange for all my nuts. Will I get many more as the game goes on or was I lucky? Should I use them only on my children, or on anyone infected? Both Notkin and some woman I never met befor are sick. So is it worth healing them or should I use antibiotics for now?

It all depends on how much you value the lives of different people and how many miracle cures you manage to get. The story implies that you should probably care more for the children than anyone else, but it's up to you. It's always a risk to let the plague roll the dice for the infected. It may be wise to only use the cures for the people you care about the most. It's also possible to get enough cures for everyone, but it might require some luck.

Shmowders are very rare. The hide and seek game is the only shmowder you can be guaranteed to get*. Finding them in caches or in trade is quite lucky. So yes, you have been lucky. You might be lucky again and find more, but don’t count on it.

But then if someone dies, they’re dead forever. And all the people are important to the town, even if you don’t understand exactly how; so curing them is always good. On the other hand, you don’t know yet who else will get infected and need curing later.

There are no definite answers: you need to weigh up your feelings for the people, and your responsibilities as a doctor, and make your own decision. Any choice is right, as long as it’s willed.

(*there is also a backer-only mini quest that gives a unique shmowder, but I assume that doesn’t apply in your case.)

Let's put it this way: if I ever ended up in a situation where killing an innocent person in cold blood would net me a shmowder, I'd do it in a heartbeat, no questions asked.

Kill any one for them. Keep them for your self.

yet again, i'm flabbergasted how easily people get shmowders. I swear, I think the children in all of my games must have been burning them for fun or something

If you make a habit of asking every small female child you see (the tiniest ones), and examine every park daily, you'll find quite a bit.

Otherwise, if you are a normal human being, you're SOL.

I found a couple more by buying them from the fellow traveller.

Yeah, I recall watching a Let's Play person find one like every time they stopped at him but more often than not all he had for me was like fish, riffle bullets, twyrine and bracelets lol
in every playthrough!

I am uncertain if his stock is entirely random, or determined by the time one reaches him. I've heard that if one talks to him ASAP, he is more likely to have a shmowder.

I'll have to try and see if that's the case next time i play. i think there were certainly several days where I reached him pretty late. I wonder if watching the theater performances first changes anything

If it's your first playthrough, you did get kinda lucky.

On my 3rd I was able to get 5 in the first couple days. 3 is going to be a nice safety net going forward.

It's not entirely based on random chance, I got one on day 4 or 5 by trading a leather belt I got from notkin on day 1 and giving it to the soul and a half child in the nutshell for a shmowder.

Super valuable. If you can get them, you should. Without them, people will die. If someone gets infected, and you don't want them to die, you should use them. Just remember... you can't save everyone.
