Water tower in station?
can we get water towers as a station add on like the maintanance shed? the maintanance station is too big to add everywhere and water dowers make huge bottle necks.

I'm pretty sure the cost and bottlenecking are intended to be challenges to be overcome, a design philosophy point. I'm not saying I disagree with you, just how I think things are.

Newer ever I've have had bottlenecks on towers. In stations, junctions yes, but towers. I imagine it happens because there aren't enough or missplaced. Do not place them next to stations or junctions. There should be enough space for at least 3 trains between tower and station, junction, except very short lines or branches.

that is the issue, the maps are too small and singal control eats a ton of space. also to keep towns past 120,000 supplied takes more than a double track can really take.

My advice is to learn how to not use Signal Control. It's expensive, too big, and very inefficient. Once you get the hang of it City size is easier to increase.

2 stations per town - 16 connections - much much more than enough for 120000 town.

You usually won't get bottlenecks on tracks with water towers or otherwise. As long as you click on the track's route button and see that track usage is low, you're fine. Things may start to slow down when you hit more than 50% track usage, but should still be manageable if you spread your loads across multiple tracks where possible.

And if the map is small, you'll likely have more short routes, which means you don't need as many trains on any particular route to keep a town well supplied. This allows you to reduce track usage further to minimize bottlenecks.

two stations per town is coping for what is a broken game. multiple tracks don't help because if you 4 line (2 N, 2S) all the loco will only take two (1N, 1S) because the path finding can't use multiple tracks.

You can set way-points to control what track they use and you can set which platform a train can use.

Once you understand the game mechanics most of the things make a lot of sense and work just fine. I like having separate Stations because it allows a more efficient setup. There is plenty of authority to serve the Cities without even using Warehouse buildings.

You can also use Warehouses to deliver anything except Mail and Passengers to your large cities. Learn how to use them.
