But it's gonna be gud. Pretty much everyone says it feels most like Zero/AC5
Honestly, I wouldn't hate Assault Horizon's Dogfight mode if 1) It was only for Nuggets/Novice controls and 2) wasn't tied to scripted "Boss" Battles. If they wanted a more natural way to give you "Boss Aces" just let the Aces/bosses use flares indefinitely unless you fulfill certain scripted criteria (IE: Kill all wingmen) though if you were good enough to get him with guns for a fast kill, you win all of the Borders. I get that isn't a perfect solution, but neither is instagibbing supposed "Aces" with a Semiactive AMRAAM and especially not that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with Akula.
Kono demonstrated it in Free Flight with level horizon and a pretty high energy. I'm sure it's wayy harder to pull off in the missions, but it must be in the game if they've marketed it.
Self Contained Stories, but they feed on a lot of the political history of the past games to enrich the experience. But most of this will mostly be fan service to people like me, who have been following Ace Combat long enough to unironically say Belka did Nothing Wrong.
The only important Ace Combats to know anything about are:
Ace Combat 4 Shattered Skies/Distant Thunder
Ace Combat 5 The Unsung War
Ace Combat: Zero The Belkan War
Those 3 form the core lore of the Strangereal Earth fiction. Particularly events from 4 are going to be somewhat important.
Probably the most immediately important/practical information you can have going in is knowing how the major players of Strangereal Earth line up to certain Real World Nations, to kind of place their power in the grand scheme.
Osea - Basically the United States. One of two major superpowers
Yuktobania/Union of Yuktobanian Republics. Basically the USSR but slightly less antagonistic
Emmeria - United Kingdom
Estovakia - An Amalgom of Romania and Austria-Hungary
Kingdom of Erusea - Napoleonic France/Fascist Italy
Principality of Belka - Fascist Germany
Independent State Allied Forces(ISAF) - the European NATO nations backed by Osea
If you want to see the lore, here's a supercut of the Cinematics and Briefings of Ace Combat 4, which also contain key story elements (Such as what the narrator responds to in the Manga-style panels)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXSvSoxepNY
Actually, I can't find one that was smart enough to keep the Briefings in, which IMO are just as crucial to the story as they add context from the ISAF perspective (Your army) where as the Narrator is speaking from the Erusian (As a citizen under occupation) perspective.
I'll post the most important Mission briefings and try to line them up with timestamps of where they are relevant. You can skip the actual gameplay fine. If you want to see the game in its entirety, there's many playthroughs up.
Mission 1 Briefing and Intro: This fits in right at 2:12 from the long cut video.

Keiko Kobayashi is doing the soundtrack and there's no Helicopter levels.
Instant Buy for me.
And it's "Keiki". "Keiko" is a girl's name lol.
Lol, my bad.
He still claims he is willing to work on the Ace Combat series regardless of his indepdent status. If anything, he's more like Jeremy Soule now... Soule is an independent composer but pretty much composes every Elder Scrolls game (And the same for Inon Zur and Fallout)
Infinity showed that they are very aware of what the players want, when it comes to flight mechanics and physics. The only real problems with infinity were the PS3 exclusitivity, and the monetisation model.
