If Doom is your yardstick for good gameplay (as it is for me), I would steer well clear of this one.
The controls feel way off. When sprinting the strafe keys suddenly act as turn keys instead (WTF?!). The grapple - no sorry, "leash" - that you get is not for mobility. Instead you use it to pull enemies out of cover (which is good, because they sure do like hunkering down and spraying wildly inaccurate, hitscan bullets your way). Hell, you can't even jump.
I haven't played long enough to find a second weapon, but at least the first machinegun has zero feel to it - crap sound, big-ish spread, can't really tell if I'm hitting or not but the baddies roughly under my reticle topple over, so ... yay?
Even the characters are unlikable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Just search YouTube for "bulletstorm intro".
That's said, I agree if you liked doom, you may not like bulletstorm. Doom focuses on fast paced action, killing enemies from left and right boom boom. Bulletstorm focuses on the way you finish your enemies, namely trick shots. You can pull them with you leash and kick them to a fan/cactus/river/electricity etc etc. Or you can slide into them and shoot their bunghole for rear entry. The game rewards you for such creativity, if the game recognizes it.
Also, "the hype".... Funny how nobody around here remembers the ♥♥♥ incident gearbox had last year. There is no real hype, they just totally f'ed up marketing for this title. I believe "huh? What is this game? It looks fun I never heard of it" is just the most common reaction. It's a 2011 action game rerelease
for reference: Wolfenstein TNO, CoJ Gunslinger is my fave FPS .
I used doom because is the most common/recent "Good" FPS on top of my head
