Connection Issues
Hi all it has come to my attention that people have been having issues with connecting to others on Bulletstorm Multiplayer, I do not know if this affecting a few users or all that have the game.

If you have issues, please leave a reply so we can see how big this issue is. I have submitted a ticket to see if GBX has anything to say on the matter, if you have issues yourselves please also submit a ticket, if they see one or two they will assume it is a problem on our end if they see a few hundred it might convince them something is going on and investigate it further.

Thanks for reading, hope this issue gets sorted out soon.

UPDATE, so GBX got back to me with a number of possible fixes which seems to have no effect for me. NAT sounds like it might be an issue except for one thing, if it was, more games would have this issue.....

I have also tried turning the firewall off to see if that was the issue, I can confirm this is NOT a firewall issue.

To find your NAT type, you can contact your Internet provider for specific steps based on your modem/router. Here's some helpful information on understanding and finding out your NAT type:
Check all the physical devices on your network to ensure they are plugged in and powered on.
Perform a connection test on each device connected to the network.
Understanding NAT Types:
NAT Types:
• Open
Open NATs can connect to any of the three types. --> Probably the least common type
• Moderate
Moderate can only connect to open and moderate. --> Probably the most common type
• Strict
Strict can ONLY connect to open.
Strict NATs are a difficult problem with peer-to-peer games. Since most people don't have open NATs, the player with a strict NAT won't be able to find many joinable games.
Also, if the player with a strict NAT does manage to join a game, if another player with a moderate NAT joins later, the player with the strict NAT gets kicked out.
The problem is even worse since it is sometimes difficult for software such as Games for Windows Live to detect which NAT type it is running behind, and can often report that the player has a moderate NAT when they actually have a strict NAT.
Another problem is that sometimes the ISP (Internet Service Provider) is also behind a NAT, which often means even if you have a direct connection to the internet (without a router/firewall), the ISP still acts as a strict NAT.
Port Forwarding:
PC:
Online games should not require port forwarding with the latest update. However, some security or firewall software may block access to required ports or certain types of traffic. Check your security software settings to ensure traffic on the following ports is allowed.
For LAN games, the host must have the following ports forwarded:
Port 7777 (UDP and TCP)
Port 28900 (TCP)
Port 27900 (UDP)
Port 28910 (TCP)
If you need assistance with opening these ports, please refer to the following website for more information (you will need to know your router brand and model, as the website guides are based on specific routers)
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
Here are some additional tips that have helped many players improve their connectivity:
1. Make sure your router's firmware is upgraded the latest version (very important).
2. Unplug your router for 10 minutes and plug it back in. Some older routers degrade in performance over time until it is rebooted, similar to a PC.
3. Disable any firewall or other network filtering for the game.
4. Enable uPnP (universal plug and play) on your router.
5. If you don't care about security, enable DMZ (de-militarized zone) on your router for your PC's address. This turns off all of your router's firewall features for that specific PC.
6. Get a router that has the "Xbox LIVE compatible" or "Certified for Windows Vista" logo.
7. Contact your ISP and ask them what your DNS setting should be.
Direct Connection:
If you are still having issues connecting to the online servers after trying the above steps, try connecting your broadband modem directly to the console or PC you are playing the game on. This can help determine if the issue is related directly to the router or another source.

Thanks Sage for testing these out, he has this issue and it is very frustrating.

Update: Gearbox has gone silent of late, could be virus issues or they got nothing however, got a possible fix.

Managed to acquire a VPN this week and tried it out and looks like it works with the same guy in the post above. While many of you might not have a VPN your partner might and as long as he can host it hopefully will be fine. (Also many anti-virus/anti-malware software might have this as a free option, while it might not be as reliable as a paid one it is worth a look at least).

Will prod GBX further for a more permanent fix.

Sage did mention this might be a Ipv4 issue and a Ipv6 might fix it, we did try his new router first before the VPN and it did not seem to have an effect. We will give it another go without VPN to see if there is any change.

We tried without a VPN and while he could not host I could without a VPN.

Check if your router is a Ipv4, this might be the issue at hand.

Can confirm a VPN can also fix the problem, the person using the VPN must be the client/one with the issue.

Update from Gearbox is that they have taken the recent information onboard and have passed it onto the support team, as yet there is no ETA of a fix as the dev team is still tied up with other commitments at this time (Likely Outriders is not actually finished yet).

Will update if I hear anything more.

Afraid not, the two remedies that we can do are the VPN and the Ipv6 router.

we tried vpn, it worked for a partner to connect, but the connection is disconnected, a maximum of 10 waves have passed, in my case the vpn does not work...

It is working, just that whatever VPN you are using is not stable enough, if it didn't work you would not be able to connect, let alone to 10 waves
