is there way to check traits of survivor before recruiting?

Sadly, you can't, you have to recruit them and exile them if you do not like the traits.

Only way to see if a character is good or not (or should I say possibly good) before recruiting them is to check their health and stamina, if the max number is under 100 that means they have a bad trait.

Also, check if their stats (fighting/shooting) can be maxed or not (7 stars), if they only have a max of 5 stars in a stat, they have a bad trait.

And lastly, the number of "learned" stars also indicates they have a good trait, I had this guy with all stats already upgraded to the second level, turns out he had the "special force" trait, not a good one nor a bad one, no effects besides having increased starter stats and one less possibility to have a bad trait.

It is pretty much random I think, however from my experience, if a character looks nice, have a decent name, have at least 100-100 health-stamina and a fifth skill I am looking for, they have bad traits or bad hero bonus.

Depending on the circumstance, you can sometimes use a dialog option to see their stats before you recruit.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Some of this is good info some of it bad.

Concerning HP and Stamina. You need to first subtract Cardio and Fighting extra Hp and Stamina from the totals then check there base hp and stamina to see if they have special traits concerning bonus or subtracted hp and stamina. However even then it doesn't nessarily tell you anything good about the character. Negative Stamina and Negative HP traits can still be good choices due to hero bonuses.

Food Allergies is a good example as it gives you -20hp however can give you Meal Plan as a hero bonus which is a pretty big deal.

To answer your question OP. You can't really check. So you pretty much just have to go for it and grab someone.

You can speak to members of other enclaves and select "Learn about this survivor" as a dialog option.

I don't know why people aren't mentioning this. It works pretty much the same way it did in SoD1, you get a view of what their individual skills are/star (level) numbers and such.

You should be able to see the info any time, but if the particular NPC is offering you a mission, then speak to the other members of his/her group (there should be at least two) and you can view their abilities.

OP was asking about traits, you can't see traits with "learn about survivor"

There is a mod tool that helps you edit traits if you are really so salty about random survivors. Otherwise you can't see them cause obviously you don't know that person well enough. Same happened in SOD1 where they would tell you their life story and suddenly unlock a trait.

Everyone wants a ascetic, indefatigable, determined bagpiper, a immortal unbreakable daredevil with a incredible immune system with a dense bone condition, that keeps bees on the side, that can take a punch from rough hands, that they can put hand sanitizer on.
But wheres the fun in that.
Each star = 3 pts. to health, stamina or both... If i remember right
If a blank has a health or stam stat around 140, recruit them.
