You can still play Multiplayer, but only in Friends Only hosted mode because the main online server has been shut down. Join an ACM group for co-op and to farm MP achievements.

Hello there,
Steam A:CM groups and Steam Add Request are indeed the Key to reach playing people and/or peeps wishing to play A:CM on Steam. Every single player you'll reach will lead you to another... and another... and another... As simple as that. Then, non ( yet ) friended people can actually join you in-game ( and conversely ) via the Steam groups and via your profile if you have set your Games Activity to Public ( see recent new Valve privacy policy about Steam profiles below ) but these people only have a tiny chance to reach you via the auto-matchmaking ( search function ).

Not only because the player base is small & shy ( Steam Charts are what they are, yep, but that system never shows people wishing to play, keep that in mind ) but above all because the dang auto-matchmaking really sucks since 2013. Plus, note that servers never existed, A:CM simply uses a player-lobby-hosting system such as ( for instance ) Ubisoft's For Honor game or DE's Warframe for the available missions ( not speaking about space stations / relays ).

In other terms, choice is yours. If you're not willing to make some efforts to reach people, don't buy that game, even on sale. But if you are able to really use Steam tools and if you are ready to pay attention to Steam A:CM groups content ( such as Forums, Group Chat, Comments, and more ), to Steam Add Requests, to the new Valve privacy policy, you might have a bloody good time and you'll reach way more people than you think. You might even be surprised, pal.
