Can't access main menu while in-game

This is so obvious it's probably a known issue, but I haven't been able to find it, so here goes...

After I start a new game, I can't seem to access the main menu. The internet tells me that the main menu is mapped to the Escape key, which is working for every other function it performs (moving between/out of inventory, skills, etc.) But when I hit Escape in the hopes of saving/pausing/quitting, I can't do it. I have to open the Task Manager to quit the game (thereby losing my save point, also.)

This is making the game basically unusable. Help, anyone?
