1: Majority of the game like 99% of it you will be firing your weapon to solve everything. EVERYTHING.
You'll be shooting way to much and if you play with friends you need to shoot even more on one enemy to kill it. This is what killed it for me in first Borderlands.
Also you know those cool features they claimed weapons to have? Well in Borderland 1 they where quite useless for majority of the time and you just basically looked for a gun with high damage.
Borderlands 2 doesn't improve on this a whole lot. Just a bit. Skill system is still as horrible as it was in the first game too. One single active skill for each class is just flat out bad.
But IF and I mean IF you like firing the game gun for hours on end to kill enemies, you might actually like the game. Most people got bored of it.
I suggest watching these two first impressions of the game.

and the follow up to the first one.

He doesn't spoil anything and that's from someone who isn't a ultra fan of the series.
However if you hate Diablo 3 due to reasons other than loot, then you probably won't hate Borderlands 2 for the same reason as you hate D3.
Fans will always love the next game. I found him to be quite right on all points as all I saw was the same game.
The game isn't looking to be that much better when it could have been far far better.

If you like loot games, I find Borderlands 2 to be one of the best ones out there, as there is a nice balance between getting rare items, and wanting to find more - as the quote above also shows, even if stated in a negative light :)
As for the gameplay, yes, if you boil it down "shooting solves everything", which is true for most FPS games anyway. Here, it's part of the mechanic - again, as with most loot games ;)
The level system can be a bit tedious, but unlike most games that involve leveling, I find myself thinking "I want this skill, but I'd like that one as well!" - and not "What skill is even worth getting?"/"Well, that's the only skill worth having".
As for the classes, you aren't shoe-horned into any specific weapon-type based on it, you are encouraged to utilize a specific type, but if you choose not to level up the skills that cater only to specific weapons, it's perfectly viable to use other weapons - even with the Assassin class, which is arguably the class that comes the closest to being shoe-horned into a role.
Personally, I find Borderlands 2 is the first game in a long time where i actually laugh at the humor, not simply smile or smirk, and the first game for a good while where I log in because I want to play, not just want to progress.
And finally, as people have stated, if you find people to play with, the fun only increases - but it's not mandatory, i find.
So all in all, well worth the investment, in my opinion. :)
Stop comparing this game to your standard formula and they say "UNBALANCED". So what if the game has weapons that give you an advantage, that's the point for finding new loot all the time. You can't compare a pistol to a shotgun obviously, its a secondary weapon.
