Can't use Roland's Vault or Claptrap's Secret Stash

I'm having an issue where I can't use either of Roland's Vault or Claptrap's Secret Stash for twinking items between chars.

For Roland, yes, I picked up the echo recorder and I finished the mission but cannot store anything in it. To put stuff in is greyed out and not an option for me. I thought I had to expand its capacity which I did with Eridium but it didn't work. I figured i'd give Claptrap's a try as an alternative. It too is greyed out.

yeah, i had the same issue at first. i then found out you have to go into backpack first, pick an item, then store it into the vault/stash. bit of an annoyance, since i'd like to just pick an empty slot, then pick an item to go into it
