I am usually a person who prefers to hang back, and use a sniper or other long range weapons in combat, I also played as Zer0 for my first character. I am however having a blast with Krieg and his mania tree for insane melee combat.
That being said though, starting out, Krieg can seem very underwhelming, but he starts to pick up and become significantly more powerful once you make your way down a skill tree. In the beginning expect to die a lot if you are pushing for heavy melee combat out the gate.
I have also been leveling with a friend(playing as a healer speced Maya) starting at level 30. Once I picked up Release the Beast in the Mania tree, Krieg practically seems unkillable.
What level did you play to, which tree did you use, weapons, ect? My personal experience with the Mania tree, combined with explosive weapons(although I don't use them much now, I'm almost always in Release the Beast transformation), that I am like a walking unkillable explosive plague of death. I actually joked with my leveling partner that I feel like a walking nuclear bomb.
I also use a shield that comes from the Big game hunt DLC, called The Rough Rider, which always has a shield capacity of 0, giving Krieg full uptime on his skills that take effect when shields are down. The added 20% damage reduction with that shield allows me to instantly revive teammates without getting downed into FFYL, which I can then immediatly activate Release the Beast(healing me back to full health), and then proceed to go ballistic on anyone or anything thats hanging about.
I played to levl 52, went all out on bloodlust most of the time but closer to the end of using him i went to the mania tree and used the release th beast which in using it was his 2nd best skill set just got annoyed with him smacking himself in the face while i was trying to beatdown someone.
If you enjoy a borderline suicidal game play style (run'n'gun and / or melee), he's the best. Charging into groups of enemies despite the odds and still coming out on top is so satisfying. He's a psycho and is most effective when he's played like one.
Fun tip: Mania and Pyro trees + Flame of the Firehawk & + fire damage gear = Inferno Titan. Everything that doesn't resist fire dies, everything that resists fire gets buzz axe to face.
