I'm reminded of a quote from a Borderlands video used to introduce this very subject. To paraphrase "The story of a video game is like the story of a porn movie. You expect it to be there, but it's not important."
Stories of video games don't need to be particularly complex or even particularly well-written, but if it goes beyond simply being something the player doesn't care about and becomes something they actively dread the thought of experiencing, that's a problem in-and-of-itself.
Pfffffttt. The only reason anyone is dreading the story is that they believe the influencers that tell them they are supposed to. Influencers that need controversy to generate clicks/income.
Borderlands 3 came out five years ago. Maybe that was true when it first released, but video games that get entirely undeserved hate for that long are rare. And it's not like the wider internet doesn't acknowledge what Borderlands 3 gets right. They just think the story is complete dogwater and is the worst part of the game.
If you want a looter that had a good story and charachters you should have played Destiny 2 10 years ago all the way to the final shape expansion, unfortunately it's too late now.
For me the humor is a big part of the borderlands experience. It was perfect in B2 with Jack (and Claptrap ofc). It didn't click for me at all in B3, at some point in the middle I just stopped playing and never finished it. The antagonists in B3 were the worst I've ever seen in any video game, the writing of those 2 youtuber idiots was just pure cr*p.
Gonna be very cautious with B4, watch some gameplays before I buy. No preorder for sure.
I waited for quite a while before I bought BL3. After the whole Epic exclusive issue, I didn't want to give either 2K or Gearbox more than the minimum necessary. And by then I'd heard how much the story sucked and the fact that they killed off Maya. So ... I waited for a sale on the Pandora's Box collection. Got all the BL3 content for $23 USD, and ... at that price, it was worth it. The story does suck, but the gameplay is great.
Going to wait for actual player reviews on BL4 before I even think about putting down any money. And even then ... we'll see. I may still wait for a sale.
Meanwhile all the borderlands characters have a certain style that has persisted thru all the games and the newest characters are no different , maybe even a little more flashy than some of the previous vault hunters.
It's a dumb meme https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3383880391
But just for arguments sake lets only compare their visuals and not their personality or alternate skins/heads etc etc.
So just based on looks what do we got ?
The typical borderlands formulae goes something like this Buff dude who is a tank , Soldier guy who is an all-rounder , Hot chick siren , Weird guy/girl who has some gimmick like a pet , now lets compare the games.
Borderlands 1
Buff guy , soldier guy , hot chick , weird guy (comes with bird)
Borderlands 2
Buff guy (compact edition) , Buff guy (psycho edition) , Soldier guy , Hot chick , weird chick (comes with robot), weird guy (wannabe robot)
Borderlands TPS
Buff guy (REALLY wants to be robot) , Soldier girl , Hot chick (pay to win) , Weird chick (cowboy edition) , Claptrap (robot) , Weird guy (unpaid intern edition)
Borderlands 3
Buff hot chick , Soldier guy (merc edition) , weird chick (again with robot) , weird guy (actually a robot)
Borderlands 4
Buff dude (beard edition) , Soldier guy , Hot chick , Weird chick
Like c'mon man , these a par for the course borderlands type characters , for good or bad this is the theme and they are sticking with it , as for their clothes I think they look the same as usual , a little too flashy even , not in the least bit "Generic" unless you live in a dystopian punk future.
If anything is wrong with borderlands 4 it's the disturbing lack of robot vault hunters.
