Did you try verifying the integrity of the game files.... right click game in library, properties/ local files... find the button that says verify game files (or something like that).... doing this will fix 95%( or more) of the problems with games on steam.

Yes I already tried that, but I got Borderlands 2 to work later that day (idk how), thanks for the help though! Actually this should be a discussion for everyone with this problem, this error has very few fixes.

Still won't work for me. Tried verifying it MANY times. Deleted it. Reinstalled it. Still get an error on how it's unable to locate the configuration files. :(

I should mention, I had an issue recently where I lost all my gold keys and my badass tokens were reset. Not sure about the bug, but it angers when I had 150+ keys stored up.

Now I can't even play the game.

Weird. I'll put out some random thoughts on what you may try:

1. Exit Steam, start it as administrator, try to re-verify game cache. See if that does anything.

2. Try to run the Borderlands2.exe directly from the game folder. The Borderlands2.exe, mind you, not the Launcher.exe. See if that solves it. If it does, Rightclick on your game in the library>properties>set launch options and enter "-nolauncher" (without quotes), so you can simply run it as usual from the library.

3. Try disabling any Antivirus and see if that helps.

4. Check if you actualy have the rights to play it. Meaning, perhaps you are on a parental locked account? Or maybe big bro's computer doesn't give you specific rights or something.

Sorry if those didn't help, like I said - Weird, random things to try.
I am interested to read if the 2nd suggestion works, though.

1. Tried that, didn't work.

2. I didn't even think about this way. I just always used Steam to launch it. This way works. I guess I'll have to put a shortcut on my desktop. :)

3. No AV, so I know that isn't an issue.

4. It's my computer, my account, and I have a hard copy. It shouldn't be an issue, but I get what you're saying.

Fantastic! But if you put "-nolauncher" in the launch options, you can start via steam as usual. Shortcut works too, of course, but that way is more convienient, IMO. I myself mostly launch games through steam.

I'd like to add, by launching it with the .exe must have fixed the problem I was having as I can now launch it from Steam.

Now if I can figure out why I'm stuck at 159 keys and don't gain any when I redeem a code.

Ok First Go To Your Steamapps Folder,
Go To Commons, Then Find BL2 And Go To Binaries And Find Borderlands2.exe
Then Click It .... Let The Magic Happen
(Work On Windows 8)

tried this and i got a bunch of fatal errors, yikes. i.e (filename not found) [in C:\Program FIles (86x)\Steam\steamapps\common\Borderlands2\Binaries\win32\Borderlands2.exe

heres what some of the files names were (?)

GetOutermost() Address 0x9e62e5 |&| 0x9f376b

AK::SoundEngine::StopOutputCapture() Address = 0x11ab6fb, 0x11acfa6, 0x11ad10f, 0x11ad1cc.

And troublingly these additional errors at the bottom of the log:

BaseThreadInitThunk() Address = 0x75a26359 (filename not found) [in C:\WINDOWS\System32\KERNEL32.DLL]

RtlGetAppContainerNamedObjectPath() Address = 0x76ed7c24 |&| 0x76ed7bf4 (filename not found) [in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

Personally i have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue why these errors are happening in the first place, but i know the system 32 stuff is worrisome. hopefully actually having some of the error codes may help somone
Just saw this solution in another discussion and it WORKS!!!

Go to Steam –> Preferences –> Account –> Beta participation: Steam Beta Update.
Restart Steam and you are golden. It works for me for BL2, other guys say that it solved all the issues also with other games.

Not that I don't love seeing old posts from Siris brought back to light, you are bumping an 8 year old thread. Information contained herein might not be accurate anymore, it's really better to start a new one.

Try Verifying your game files. It might or might not help, but it's always a good place to start. I'd also suggest backing up your save folder, because that's always a good idea.
