Borderlands 2 looks SOOOOO good with black outlines removed
PC version looks so much better with those thick black lines removed around objects. It really is amazing how much better the graphics look, really lets you appreciate the quality of graphics even more.

Go to your .ini config files directory. On windows 7, this is Documents/My Games/Borderlands 2/WillowGame/Config.

or

It's also possible to edit *installDir/Program Files(x86)/2K Games/Borderlands 2/Willow Game/Config

Find WillowEngine.ini (or DefaultEngine.ini)
Ctrl-F to find "WillowScenePostProcess"
Replace with "CinematicScenePostProcess"*
You can also set the file to read-only. (not needed

that does more than just remove teh outlines, that also disabled the cel shading

you can remove just the outlines by changing the two entries that say willow to ryan, if my memory serves me correctly.

would be same process as above, except replacing teh word cinematic with ryan.

I would suggest you go google this because im not bothering to verify the syntax, only telling you this does more than just the black outlines.

good day to you!

I know the outlines are removed and the game looks great. Will research the Ryan part.

i did it all just now, this better work...

The outlines are the cell shading, like it MUCH better without the lines. Landscapes have an awesome stylized realism to them. This line removal option should be in the game options menu because it really allows the game art to shine.

Looks dumb

I just did this....WOW. :O What a difference...So much better to look at. Thx for the tip.

I like the lines. That is what makes Borderland art unique. Every bloody other games are trying to look super realistic.

Theres a screenshot in my profile showing what this looks like.

Its not that removing the lines make it look realistic because the art is stylized and will never look realistic like say Crysis. It just makes everything blend better and projects a unique look. While I understand that some say the black outlines are "part of borderlands", I really appreciate the art and scenery much more without it. It fact, at times it is downright stunning, I also DO NOT use FXAA, tends to soften the look too much. I believe adding the "cinematic" line actually disables FXAA. Thats a good thing because I personally hate FXAA in any game - BF3, Crysis 3 , etc..

Before removing the outline, I thought Borderlands 2 (and Borderlands 1) was a nice looking game with almost a novelty look. Without the outlines, it looks like digital art and one of the most impressive graphical games of this generation. Maybe we will see the removal in game on the video options for Borderlands 3. Really amazing, kudos to Gearbox.

I must admit I was not convinced this would look good, as I liked borderlands appearance. I was very happy with the end results, moreso that I ever expected. Removing the black lines looks very nice.

btw, as I said before, the black outlines are not cel shading. it is two different effects.

here is what you do to remove black outlines, followed by what you do to remove black outlines AND remove cel shading.

I SAID GOOD DAY!!!!!

================================================================

Disable Black Outline Shader

You know that big black outline that surrounds most objects and gives them a more cartoonish look? It’s cool, but removing it is another way you can tone down the graphical requirements of Borderlands 2 to get it to run better.

In WillowEngine.ini, find this line:

DefaultPostProcessName=WillowEngineMaterials.WillowScenePostProcess

To turn off the shader, you need to make adjustments to the line — namely, remove both instances of the word “Willow,” so it looks like this:

DefaultPostProcessName=EngineMaterials.ScenePostProcess

Disable Cel Shading

In WillowEngine.ini, find the same line as above:

DefaultPostProcessName=WillowEngineMaterials.WillowScenePostProcess

and change it to:

DefaultPostProcessName=WillowEngineMaterials.RyanScenePostProcess

That will remove the black outline shader as above, and also disable the cel shading effect to make the graphics slightly more realistic and add more contrast on surfaces. You’ll also get a pretty marked performance boost, because these shaders take a fair amount of processing power.

The line of which you speak is NOT in the "WillowGame.ini" file. It does, however, appear in the "WillowEngine.ini" file as [DUI]BOFH stated above. So? Does it work? I'm not changing a thing until I am absolutley certain it will not cause the game to crash into a gazillion peices and send me into "Borderlands 2" oblivion.

I've been using this setting for a few months now, and I can confirm it looks way better, and also the performance improved quite a bit.

OOPS! Ignore my post. I read the original post as "WillowGame.ini". Sorry!
