Showdown - spoilers
I'm having a bit of trouble, and I'm wondering if it is a bug or something else.
Spoiler Alert for the Optional Mission Showdown!

So I killed the Sheriff, and fulfilled both the optional objectives. Her loot drop was fairly disappointing, but oh well. I did notice that Deputy Winger stopped attacking me and ran back to where he originally spawned, so I thought that he would now be my friend, especially since he evidently didn't want his job in the first place.

But after I moved to a safe area and healed up, and returned, he just started attacking me again. I paused the game and went online to see if killing him would have any bad side effects, plus I was hoping to see something that said he would stop attacking at some point (hey, I felt sorry for him).

On one website it said that he would re-spawn as your ally. So I went back to the game, ran back to the fast travel (turning in the mission as I did so), traveled to Sacntuary, and then back to Lynchwood. But he still attacked me.

Hrm.

Okay, maybe they meant 'respawn' as in 'after he dies and respawns'. So I killed him. I then ran around trying to find the 'car trunk chest' I was told would show itself once the Sheriff was dead. Nothing.

Another trip to the internet showed that the door under the big star building was supposed to open up. But it wasn't. Open I mean. I went to the top of the building, all around it, and even unloaded tons of damage into that door, but it stayed shut.

Bug?

I quit the game, and came back in. Ran back to that area. This time I saw the Deputy and the Marshals with the green life bars, so I was happy that they were, indeed, on my side. Oh sure, they were not helping me kill all the bandits that were attacking, but still I felt good that I did not have to kill Winger again. And then they all attacked me again. Argh!

I ran away, and used my sniper scope to see that, yes, the door to that garage was still down.

So my questions are these
1) Why is that door still down? Is it a bug? I killed the Sherrif in a very tight 'Fight For Your Life' situation, where she died one second before I was going to bleed out. Could that be the cause?
2) Why did the deputy and the Marshals all decide to attack me? Sure I shot a Bruiser that jumped down in the middle of them, but it was with a single shot sniper rifle and hit the guy I was aiming for. Are they supposed to ignore me, or will they always attack?

I'm feeling less sympathetic to that jerk Winger, and am now wondering if he was just playing 'good cop' to the Sheroff's 'bad cop' all along.

in the borderlands you have no friends

They are green until you reach the little area around the sheriff's office. Then they aggro and attack. I assume that is just to keep them from chasing you all around the map while you fight the Marauders. As far as the door not opening - sounds like a glitch. Quitting, reloading, and killing the Sheriff again SHOULD reopen it. You'll probably want to rekill the sheriff several times anyway, as she has a chance to drop the Sheriff's Badge(you DEFINITELY want this) and the Law (same gun you get for the Won't Get Fooled Again mission). Good luck.

Ah, so Deputy Winger really was playing Good Cop to the Sherriff's Bad Cop. Thanks, I won't feel bad about 'calling him out' now. :)

As for the glitch...I seem to have run into more of those in Lynchwood than anywhere else. Which isn't that much I admit, just something I noticed. For one thing, I died walking out the door of the train station. No shots, no baddies, just died. The train was traveling right below me at the time, so I figure some code is wacked somewhere such that I was standing in a place incorrectly designated as a 'gets run over' zone. You know where those two ammo chests are right on the inside of the doorway? I had just opened those and was starting to walk out when the train rode through and I died. Wierd.

One bug that worked in my favor was when I killed Dukino's mother, she dropped her loot (including a really nice rocket launcher), but the mission did not register. So I was actually able to reload and kill her again and get more loot (no launcher this time). :)

Next was the annoying time that the Dukino (is that his name?), was standing on the tracks just as I put the skag tongues down for him to eat. Train hit him before he could get up to eat them. He disappeared, food was on the ground, and I had to reload. Not really a bug, but an annoying circumstance.

Anyways, thanks for the help, letting me know that the Deputy and the Marshals are not supposed to become your friends. Which is too bad, good potential for more missions if they did. Clean up the town type stuff. Oh well.

As for the Sherrif's Badge, well I got the Deputy's Badge, which gives a little bonus to shotty attacks, but mostly I still wear Moxi's Endowment which adds +5.1% to experience gained. I'll try for the Sherrif's Badge to see what it does. Thanks for the heads up!

Sheriff's badge buffs pistols - which, frankly, are the only non-broken gun class in the game. Deputy's badge buffs shotguns.

The train glitch is well known. We've all been "run over" while standing over it. I've even been hit while sniping on the roof. Just take note of where you are when you hear the horn and get away from the track.
